Does Template SR Apply to Class Levels?

Does the SR from a template also apply to class levels, or to base HD only?

Say the Fiendish template.

If it simply says "The Creature's HD", then class levels apply as well. Use just starting HD only when the template specifies.

One of the aspects of a class level is a Hit Die, so they count for things based just on Hit Dice.

That's what I thought but I read something recently (FAQ? Sage Advice? EN World?) that distinguished between HD and class levels for purposes of either applying a template or adding class levels to a monster - I can't remember which. So that's what got me confused.
