This is a really good point and, coupled with the speed that reviews appear on the interweb (I mean, we have a ratings thread up here almost before the movies open), goes a long way to explaining any drop in box office takings (do we have any figures on this?). I put a lot of faith in viewer reviews such as the ones that appear on this site and almost none in the ones written by the critics. For myself, I really enjoy going to the movies. I like the big screen and the big sound. That said, my TV is only 28” and the sound is a little ropey. Maybe when I have one of these, I’ll think differently. Oh and I almost never buy snacks at the flicks since a box of popcorn costs more than my house. As has been said above, the quick release to DVD is mainly to combat piracy. It’s my understanding that most of the profit from a movie (at least to the studios that produce ‘em) comes from DVD sales. I don’t think this is the thing that has the most significant impact on box office sales. Everyone likes to see a great movie at the cinema. If you make it… they will come. If you don’t… well… I remember reading a couple of months ago that Lucas and Spielberg were putting their heads together to see what they could do to improve the movie-goers experience. One of the things they were talking about was 3D. I heard that George planned to re-release each of the Star Wars movies in 3D over the next few years (and did anyone else notice the scenes in RotS where lightsabers were waved unnecessarily at the camera, hmm?).
