Does this Plot fit the System?(Albany Game Day Players stay out)

So I'm working on putting together a Game day and I'm going to run my first One Shot game. I'm got an idea for a plot but I'm not sure if the system I chose would compliment it.

The Basic Plot:

A Crime Boss has gathered the PCs together to do a job for him. He's got a tip on some military manufactured computer chips are being transported through the area and wants the group to hijack it. (Feel free to comment on the plot. I still have a lot of work to do.)

The idea is for each player to choose a character and then I hand out secret Quarks/information that the player has. Like "Has a drug addiction", "Hates Violence", or "Works for another Mob and was hired to steal the chips for himself". Hopefully I can make things interesting enough for the players this way.

Here is my question, is D20 Modern the way to go with this game? I don't know many systems outside of D&D. Is there a better system out there that this situation will work well in? Fudge, Paranoia, Gurps, Spycraft?

Sounds like it should fit the system. Can't really suggest a better system, since we've mostly played the same systems.

Well.. you could turn it into a WEG Star Wars adventure with Hutt crimelords, Failed Jedi and Rebellion agents all trying to steal this shipment of needed computer chips from an Imperial convoy.

...Or not. :)

Your quarks/information idea sounds good.

Now, what is special about these computer chips that the crimelords want them so badly? just to sell on the black market? Or do they contain valuable information such as military codes or troop movements?

You might consider having one of the characters be a government agent trying to infiltrate this crimelord's ring. Now, whether he considers foiling this raid or getting in good with the crimelord to be a better deal is up to you. Or, perhaps there is a way to get in good with the crimelord and foil the raid (by exposing the other 'spy'). That gives you a nice little web of personal agendas.

Just make sure you have plenty of paper on hand for DM-player notes.

I did something very similar for a Cyberpunk game a while back. I don't see any reason it shouldn't work just fine in D20M. The secrets don't really affect mechanics, just add to the role-playing. Anything that helps rp-ing for a one-shot is a good idea.

As far as the hijacking, be sure to have the manufacturer put tracking devices in the packaging. They don't want their own people making off with the things either, after all. And hey, nothing says fun like when the hunters become the hunted. :)

Thanks guys.

I don't think I want to change stuff over to star wars. I want to try and keep things simple. But I do like the tracking devices and double cross over ideas.

The Chips themselves will be missle guidance chips or something like that. Soemthing that could sell for alot of money on the black market or to a special interst.
