Update We worked with him a bit last night to try and teach him to drop things when he fetches them. It's not much but it's a start. We spent a good solid twenty minutes doing nothing but tossing a ball down a long hallway/flight of stairs, and having him bring it back, and giving him a treat if he dropped the ball instead of hording it like he usually does (my goal is to eventually have him learn that when we say DROP, we mean drop whatever you are holding). He picked up on what we wanted him to do and started doing it after about 5 tries. He's a smart dog. After a while I want to move on to other objects, like giving him other toys and getting to understand the command itself, not just in the context of a game. He'd been playing for a while beforehand, so after about 40 runs up and down that stairway, he was pretty tired, and we had no trouble getting him into his crate to sleep when it was bedtime for everyone. We will repeat this again tonight. I think he had fun too. Jacks are very strong willed. If he were my familiar, I think he'd have at least a +10 to all his will saves.
