Now this is why my first inclination is to assume they pulled this **** out of their ###es.
[sblock]So Boyd Langton founds Rossum, develops doll technology, has some secret agenda, gets Caroline put into the LA house, waits for a year until Alpha goes nuts, then gets himself assigned there as Echo's new handler, puts himself in harms way repeatedly - never once hinting that he knows all there is to know about the company, until finally Echo starts to become self-aware.
At this point he lets Adelle reassign him so he's
no longer Echo's handler, and under Paul Ballard's less able handling, Echo is able to get away, but she survives by her skills, comes into her own, and returns to the Dollhouse.
Then Adelle puts her into the Attic, at which point Boyd seems really upset -- perhaps because this action will ruin his whole Xanatos Gambit plan by effectively killing Echo, or perhaps because it will allow Echo to realize who he is. However, he does not tell Adelle, "hey, I own this

ing company, do what I say," so apparently hiding his identity is more important than whatever plan he might have for Echo. (Maybe Boyd actually
did want her in the Attic, but he does a pretty good job moping about it. Then again, he's apparently a super-genius.)
Then once Echo does get out of the Attic, Boyd helps Adelle avoid being taken out of power, and gets shot for his efforts (by people who, apparently, work for him though they probably don't know so). He either is in love with Whiskey/Claire Saunders, or had her reimprinted as a sleeper agent, but I find this latter option unlikely, because it is a ridiculously inefficient way to kill Bennet Halverson, seeing as Boyd goes around with a gun all the

ing time. (I think Dr. Saunders just wanted to make Topher suffer.)
And he apparently wants to save Echo's life, and doesn't seem particularly worried that Echo will find out who he is.[/sblock]
