Study Time

Attached are PDF files for each of you regarding your time at the Coláiste Oiliúna Bairdéir. (Note that there are several Coláiste using the same facilities in the inner city - they are not really distinct colleges, buildings, or even instructors, but rather distinct courses of study, like different majors within the same college today).

Feel free to read the descriptions for the characters other than your own - all of the characters had much interaction with each other throughout their studies and would know most (if not all) of this information about each other through inter-character discussion. These descriptions will be useful for broadening the background and being 'in character,' as well as for improving the feel for the world through learning the names of some of the people in the game. Each of you now has a specific 'mentor' or 'advisor' at the school or court - these are listed in the descriptions.

Re-write for Background

Cairn MacSidhe
(pronouned "kern mac-she")

Cairn was born into a family that owed a debt of some sort to the Daoine deBith, and the MacSidhe family's intent was to pledge the first child born to the family who had Daoine traits to the service of the Daoine deBith, in repayment of this debt. (The exact details of the debt have been forgotten in the ensuing generations.) When he was born, Cairn was believed to be that child. But Cairn rejected the Daoine deBith, and strove to rid himself of all residual magic. Paradoxically, this effort turned his talent for magic into a resistance to magic. And because of this circumstance, Cairn was deemed totally unsuitable to the Daoine deBith, who then took his twin sister, Kate, instead. Cairn is now a pariah to both his family (because he was not taken by the Daoine deBith and because it was his "fault" that Kate was taken by them) and to the Daoine deBith (who have never totally fogiven Cairn's rejection of them).

Cairn is the very definition of "thick" and "stout", standing but five feet, five inches tall, but weighing some 12 stone (168 pounds). Actually, Cairn only weighs 165 pounds, but he states it as 12 stone, anyway, and he is not obese, merely THICK.

Cairn was born into a family known for their fey heritage, but by some cruel twist of fate, Cairn received no such gifts. [sblock=For Leif Only]Hang on a sec, chief! Check my last e-mail regarding 'known fey heritage.' Humans and Daoine deBith are capable of intermingling, and millenia ago did so regularly. However, in this day and age anyone showing signs of such a heritage is viewed with fear and suspicion, and generally ostracized. Hidden 'gifts' occur but are uncommon (I definitely don't mind using such a heritage to explain some of your powers/abilities). I know Mike's character is different - this is because he kindly agreed to play an NPC as his character when I asked him to. Jeremy's character has 'slightly pointed ears and a face a little longer than average,' indicating some Daoine heritage in his distant background but the signs are subtle and are generally masked by his facepaint and the 225 dog next to him tends to pull attention away from his face.

In general, any Daoine heritage would be generations back, especially if Cairn's family is a part of human society.[/sblock]

OK, guys - as you've obviously seen by now (if you're watching this thread, anyway) there's a new addition to the Criú. Cairn MacSidhe moves into your suite about 2 weeks into your studies. He quickly finds his niche within the group - he's a fair hand with the largish (OK, it's really big) axe he carries, and for such a, well, thick person he's surprisingly nimble and gives even Skáth a run for him money in the area of stealth. But where he really shines, and what comes to be his area of 'leadership' within the group, is in application of the the Queen's philosophy and laws to different situations - he has a way of finding compassionate, just solutions to tangled situations the rest of you have trouble making your way through.

After just a few days with the rest of you, it's as if he's been with you since you met at the Wickshine's Last Inn.

OOC: Roger that, Bossman. Judge(?) Cairn MacSidhe reporting for duty! I made alterations to the previous post where I introduced Cairn, trying to bring it into line with what we discussed.

Cairn MacSidhe, description

As stated previously, Cairn is 5' 7", and weighs 12 stone (his weight is actually only 165 pounds, not the full 168 of 12 stone, but he rounds up). Cairn has long, wild brown hair, and is reminiscent of Connor McCloud from the movie "Highlander." He is normally dressed in a coarse kilt, sometimes woolen, sometimes leather. Cairn's eyes are bright blue, and he is clean shaven.
