Taking a break from sussing out the mechanics of my HERO System fantasy campaign set in the M:tG game world:

http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/317076-brainstorming-m-tg-themed-campaign.html

What kind of adventures or campaign arcs would you all say would give the right FEEL of a fantasy game set in Dominaria?

Yeah, there will be some kind of plane-hopping, but I'm looking for themes that would aid in immersion and just really help me engage the players - all vets of M:tG & RPGs, both- in the game.

Themed factions.

Perhaps you go with white versus black so you have the heroes be from Benal and the city is protected by angels and wards but the phyrexians are on the march and the heroes must venture into the swamps facing rats and zombies and things in order to stop them.

Well I'd have the PCs basically be the equivalent of creature cards from the CCG. Thus they'd be the servants of a Planeswalker, doing various missions for them. They may or may not actually be summoned.

Which Dominarian time period?

I mean, there are a lot of them... Brother's War, the Dark, Phyrexian, post-Invasion?

I don't have a particular timeline in mind, but I personally stopped playing M:tG competitively after 6th. I still have access to all the backstory stuff, though.

(And my cards & decks...)

I guess what I'm asking is what kind of adventures can I run that will feel more...inherently...like they're taking place in Dominaria than in any other given FRPG setting. You know, besides just having names like "Sliver", "Phyrexia" and "Urza" being flung around.

There might not be any- and I'd be cool with that- but if someone can come up with some ideas that would aid immersion, I'd be appreciative!

Well, the fact is that Dominaria pretty much is a D&D setting ;). The creatures are a bit different, but the basis of the system is made in its unique types and interactions. And the historical points of Dominaria are pretty major as centuries seem to pass between each set.

Urborg? You have a classical necromantic Bayou area. I mean, its major known servant (Crovax) has a classic 'forbidden love' storyline with the angel Selena. Necromancers and witches battle for supremacy.

Phyrexia? It is built around the classic Nine Hells. But when the devil came...

Elves? Well they range from the Garan (not elvish in appearance and bellicose) to the Wirewood (symbiotic elves) to the Llanowar (kill ALL the non-elves who enter the Elfhame).

Dominaria is kind of like Spore. On the 'person' level it is a D&D setting. On the 'Planeswalker' level it is Magic. Not much difference :D.

*sigh*

I was afraid of that. I mean, I suspected as much, but was hoping someone else noticed something I hadn't.

Yeah, but don't fret. The whole thing is a D&D campaign... BUT, its completely open-ended. There's... Just, no, material. Thousands upon thousands of cards, and there may be a few hundred pages on the entire world. All of it seems to be contained in the novels.

So you can create pretty much anything. Dominaria and its surrounding Primes are pretty sandboxy. You can create from them... But to be honest, MTG is pretty much the D&D CCG.
