April 27, 2003: Games For Our Troops
A couple of weeks ago we sent 5,000 games to our troops deployed in Iraq and Kuwait with Operation Enduring Freedom. The "care package" had 20 of our most popular titles, including Car Wars, Chez Greek, X-Bugs, and -- of course! -- a lot of copies of the new Chez Grunt.
We’ve always had a lot of fans in the armed forces, and we hope that when they get a little downtime from their mission, this will help them relax and feel a bit closer to home. These are all board and card games, each one complete in itself; we're thinking that will be more practical than RPGs.

The games were donated through the U.S. Army Community and Family Support Center (CFSC) in Kuwait. The CFSC provides oversight for Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) operations worldwide. Loren Wiseman gets our thanks for rounding up the information and making the contact.

The person we worked with is Ms. Sherry Murphy, at sherry.murphy@kuwait.army.mil. If you're a game publisher . . . or, for that matter, a book publisher . . . think about sending something to our folks. They'll be there for a while; they're there for us; show them some support.

Very cool, indeed. I know a few of those folks are playing in a CMG adventure, too. I wonder how they managed to print it out... :)

This is something we have been wanting to do but I did not know where to start. I have emailed sherry and am thrilled you all pointed out the way to get books donated to our troops overseas.

Thanks!

I have some family members stationed over there right now, and recently got to talk to one of them on the phone.
Dice.
Dice are what they are lacking.

My brother (Who was just notified that he could expect an extended tour) told me a kind of funny story about playing D&D recently. I don't know when it was, or where (we both know better than to ask/tell times/locations)
We were sitting in the Bradley, playing D&D and were at the end of the fight. I was rolling damage on my fireball, one die six at a time, to finish off the fight, when some a$$clown dropped a burst across the side of the vehicle.
We grabbed our gear, dismounted, and taught him and his friends some manners, then came back in. The DM couldn't remember what had gone on, so we had to redo the fight.
And my wizard got killed.

I don't know, I thought it was funny.
But, what I was rambling about...
CD's with the SRD/core rules on it will be a big help (The US Army is heavily wired) along with some dice programs. The less paper, the better (My brother's character is written on the inside of a torn apart pack of smokes) and CD's are the way to go. Light, easy to burn, and easy to ship. Plus, it'll let them pass it around.

Just my $1.50, since $0.02 won't buy you a punch in the face nowdays.
