Dragon 373 - Bestiary: The Brood of Alloces

Interesting. About a month ago I made something which is pretty much an elite version of the Vile Host.

The Shadar-Kai Deathmaster splits into a zombie and a wraith when bloodied.

I'm curious if that's just a case of parallel creation or if Ari saw my post and was inspired. :)

Parallel creation, I'm afraid. It was actually inspired (very roughly) by something a friend of mine did in our 4E playtest campaign.

Oddly enough, that's something I considered myself, like a "Horseman" that, when bloodied, is unhorsed and becomes "Soldier" and "Warhorse". This is in no small part inspired by Warcraft 3's Elf Archer + Hippogriff = Hippogriff Rider.

Way to go with the monster compression, Ari!!!

Merge three monsters into one! (Yeth Hound, Hellcat, Hell Hound)

;)

Shame the artwork is kinda crappy, not that you have any control over that!

My one complaint is that I would have preferred the "Codex of Betrayal" article on Alloces before this bestiary, but its a minor complaint. Those are some very cool, and very disgusting, monsters in there. My two favorites are shrieking steed (though it seems to be missing its spider climb movement trait) and the carpets of flesh. Nasty.

Yeah, it does seem odd to me that they chose to run them in this order, rather than doing the Codex today and the bestiary on Monday. But as you say, not a big deal.

Glad you like. :)

No idea why the shrieking steed lost its climbs speed and spider climb traits; they were in the draft I sent in... :confused:

I like this one a lot, and wish once more I ran a higher level game.

I have gotten to run one game with an undead black dragon that, when bloodied, decohered into:

1) a great big animate hurricane of jagged scales, lashing at adventurers with barbed whips of dragonskin;
2) a Phalagar-derived, spiderlike entity, dripping with acid and composed of the dragon's flesh and muscles and organs;
3) a difficult-terrain skeleton, conveniently right near the map's main chokepoint; and
4) a huge fractured draconic Vortex Wraith, attacking the party with spectral claws and trying to suck people off the great bridge with that vortex aura it has.
