Well, I think I've got some good news and some bad news for you, then... The good news: No, you won't be seeing a "horrid d20 Annual" this year. The bad news: You won't be seeing a Dragon Annual, either. If I remember correctly, over on the Dragon boards last fall, Johnny Wilson himself stated that there would no longer be any Dragon Annuals or d20 Annuals. He was pretty miffed at what he considered to be a vehemently negative reaction from the fans about a "freebie bonus" that had been given to them. Of course, it was pointed out to him that a Dragon Annual isn't really a "freebie bonus," it's actually something that had been promised as part of a Dragon subscription. I believe the problem was that Johnny had been unaware that the subscription cards still had the free Dragon Annual as part of what subscribers got with their subscription. He thought that by putting out a d20 Annual (using Erik Mona and his Polyhedron crew instead of Jesse Decker and his Dragon crew, who were already cranking out a monthly magazine), he'd be giving the subscribers a bonus without overtaxing the Dragon staff. (I know Dave Gross, the former Dragon editor, used to refer to the month that he had to put together an annual as well as the normal issue as "the Hellmonth.") The fans were underwhelmed with the d20 Annual (and pretty vocal about it), Johnny felt he was getting a lot of hostility for something that in his mind was something he did "above and beyond the call of duty," harsh words were exchanged on the Dragon boards, and Johnny pretty much said that that was the last year he'd ever bother worrying about an Annual. If you look at your subscription cards in Dragon nowadays, you'll notice no mention of an Annual is made. Now, I'm only repeating what I recall from the Dragon message board threads last year; I'm not trying to put words into anyone's mouth or misrepresent anyone's feelings on the subject. For that matter, the info I've passed on is nearly a year old, and perhaps a different decision has been made in the meantime. If we're lucky, maybe Johnny, Jesse, or Erik will chime in and post their own views on the subject. Johnathan
