Yes, but if you're going to maximize a dragon (make it ancient), do the same for the Balor, e.g. 72 hps. Also, it is listed as a 'rare' - I had forgotten there were only a few of them. Exactly! That's why I was comparing 1e(party vs. dragon) against 3.5e(party vs. dragon) AND that a 3.5 dragon has more 'stuff'. A 1e party simply never feared a dragon as much as a 3.5e party would. Especially since the risk was well worth the reward, IIRC. Right, because 1e used combat matrices, pre-Thac0. Lord, it's been so long I can't even remember what the adjustments were. It might've been some house rules or special circumstances that modified the die. I think in that particular case a '19' had been rolled and that began the argument. In the end, the DM said it had to be a 'natural' EDIT: I fired up the rapidly dwindling brain cells to remember the situation. It's been 27 years, so I'm qualifying it with an "I believe". We had to be using a house rule or something from Dragon mag, as I don't remember 1e providing things like prone modifiers or Dex checks. The remorhaz burst up through the ground. Everyone in the party had to make a Dex check (4 or 5d6 vs. Dex) or fall prone (giving it a modifier to its attack roll). The mage and I failed. Fortunately, I was technically behind it so it went after the mage and the DM rolled a '19'. With the 'prone' modifier the roll went up to 21 (23?). We argued if that qualified as a score of '20' and I think the DM eventually said no.
