[Dragon] issue 304, title should have been monsters (not mercs)

Just to get it out of the way I liked this issue.

Having said that there was something pecuilar about a Monster themed issue coming out at the same time as Savage Species being called Mercenaries.

Except for Mike Mearls (excellent) article there wasn't anything else Merc related in the magazine. And that article swung as strongly toward justifying "odd PC types" as it did toward a Mercenaries.

Wondering if the constant complaining about tie-ins drove Paizo from mentioning that the mag was connected to (or at least had a lot of material favorably disposed toward) Savage Species.

Now that you come to mention it, that's an excellent point...oh well. The content was good, so that's what really matters. Paizo seem to be doing a good job in that department, even though the (mentioned on these boards) subscription problems are happening.

Brannon, hate to pump your ego like this, but I've been talking with people about Prestige Races in the chatrooms for the past two weeks because of that article. Good stuff. Although most people don't realize that Oathbound contains a lot more Prestige Races - well, they didnt' before I told them about it.

I found it interesting that in the article, it doesn't require the characters find a location that specifically allows the process to occur as required in Oathbound. That is a great balancing item in these powers, and also great flavour. In fact, my current part on the Forge are about to discover the whole Prestige Race thing as they explore a chtonian temple built into the deep shores of the Wellspring.

Hound, feel free to pump my ego anytime ya like. ;) Which chatrooms, BTW, I'd be more than happy to drop by and wag me tongue a bit! :) Thanks for your compliments on the article, I truly appreciate it. :)

Yea, while they put it in as as optional bit (i.e. the "For Your Campaign" sidebar, Greg originally intended for it to be a focus of the article, as it is in Oathbound. Over at the Bastion forums we've been discussing some of the other unusual changes in the article (they made everything weaker and took out some flavor bits for some unknown reason). We figure it was to make Prestige Races more applicable to settings other than Oathbound, which in the end makes sense I guess. After all the article is meant to be added into any game, and Oathbound initially is a bit "over the top" in comparison to other CS's. ;)

If you (or anyone else, for that matter) would like to see some of the stuff that was edited out, or join in the discussion, head here:

Also, I just posted a couple of bits that were left out of the Prestige Races themselves over at THE ENKWELL, you can snag them here:

Enjoy! :)

Thanks Tallarn, I hadn't noticed that thread. I subscribed recently (& don't live in Europe) so I hope I've managed to dodge the bullet.

Though slightly off topic (gotta love pimping) Ashy's making the point for me. The prestige races (AKA making your normal character a weird creature) definitely was the sort of thing that would go into the Savage Species tie-in issue; and which is oddly out of place in a Mercenaries issue.
