Dragon Magazine Archive

First Post
in 1999 dragon released a software package called Dragon Magazine Archive. It had issues 1-250 plus the 7 issues of The Strategic Review (a magazine owned by the same company that was a predicessor of dragon) It is in a pdf format and has a built in search engine and looks like a great deal. Unfortunatly I have been unable to find it anywhere. amazon and ebay have failed me. even google can't seem to help. have any of you heard of this program, and more importantly, do you know where I can find a copy? I appreciate the help. I dont know if there has been a similar program for dungeon, or if they have released anything of the sort for later issues, but if anyone knows where to find those I would be interested in that as well. I want to someday have a copy of evert issue in some format or another.

have it buried away at the moment... think i am due to dig it and and enjoy some of those early issues again.

i believe there was a problem in that art was reused that tsr/wizards did not have the right to reuse. i have a feeling that unsold stock was returned and destroyed.

it is an amazing item... you get to travel back in time to the roots of DnD.

no idea where you can find a copy these days.

no dungeon compilation was published

I have it, and it is wonderful. eBay is about your only hope, though most gamers I know of cling to the thing like barnacles. No further Dragon compilation or Dungeon compilation was ever done. Now that both are wrapping up soon, this should be done pronto.

Got it when it came out. Don't use it a lot, but it's a great trip down memory lane.

My recollection is similar to tenkar's -- they got into some hot water over including stuff that they didn't have rights to *, which would seem to make doing anything like this again less likely.

* I've read that this includes the "Knights of the Dinner Table" strips that used to run in Dragon, and that, as part of the settlement with Kenzer & Co., Kenzer get to use the D&D logo on their Kalamar products. Not sure if this is accurate or not.

IIRC, it was an after-the-fact court decision in a seperate case (v NYTimes, maybe?) over electronic distribution rights of previously printed material. Since that was decided, those issues are hashed out in advance, so presumably a compilation of post-3.0 (or at least post 3.5 stuff) would be feasible if the agreements with the authors/artists included electronic rights.

I have disks 1,2, and 4 I think. One of them got stepped on an broken during a move.

i misplaced one of my discs too... dont remember which...i'm sure it is in some ancient computer game cd holder tho ;)

Yes, the kenzer co issue with the use on KotDT was a big part of the problem... possibly the whole problem, but iam not sure

I didnt know there had been any legal problems over it. I just assumed that they were hard to find... this will make things more difficult... some of the back issues are as expensive as an x-men comic too. I need a better job....

I've got it. But I barely use it anymore; if you are interested I could sell it tyou cheaper than you'll find it anywhere else.

Yeah, I remember on r.g.f.d when this came out.

This, along with FR interactive ATLAS and the PO CD creator made us pretty impressed with TSR's digital initative although the dragon magazine was buggy at the time.

However, as others have said, TSR got into hot water for not paying people (and it was a mistake). The actual case IIRC was actually against National Geographic as they had tried to compile a retrospective but were blocked by the courts' siding with the photographers.

Its why pretty much no magazine has anything like Dragon since I think Dragon was the only long-lasting magazine that slipped through before it became well known in the magazine trade that this was a no-no.
