Analysis of the abilities I created this class primarily for an arcane spellcaster, so I will analyse its abilities in that context: HD: 1d6 This is not a combat-heavy class. However, I figured that a class that emulates the abilities of a dragon should have a higher HD than a pure wizard or sorcerer. Hence 1d6. Fort save: Good For the same reason as the HD increase Ref & Will save: Same as a wizard or sorcerer BAB: poor This is still primarily an arcane spellcaster. Hence the poor combat ability. Dragon Might: This ability does not increase at 4th and 8th level. Therefore it is only +8 at 10th level. Combined with the halved spellcasting advancement, this means that a 10th level dragon master will have +3 to spell penetration checks against dragons compared to a single-class wizard of equal level. Against non-dragons he will have -5 to spell penetration checks due to the slowed spellcasting advancement. Protection from Dragons: This was intended to be similar to Protection from Evil (a 1st level spell) except applied to dragons rather than evil outsiders. The duration is roughly the same as for Magic circle against Evil, which the character can learn before entering this prestige class due to the spellcasting requirement. Dragon Resistance: This is the same as an Endure Elements spell (a 1st level spell) cast at the beginning of each day. At 8th level it becomes more powerful, but still far smaller than the resistance provided by a Greater ring of elemental resistance. Dragon Scales: This ability is essentially the same as the Bone Armor ability of the Pale Master (another prestige class for arcane spellcasters) from tome and blood. Dragon Eye: This ability duplicates one of the effects of the True Seeing spell (a 6th level spell for sorcerers and wizards). This might seem powerful for an ability that a character can gain at 7th level, but it is fairly limited compared to the spell. I therefore think that it is balanced. Dragon Fang: This might be powerful for a combat-type, but for a wizard it is fairly weak because wizards do not generally fight in melee. This is the first ability that I would cut if I wanted to remove abilities. Dragon Breath: This ability deals 20d6 points of damage at most at 10th level. A 10th level dragon master is at minimum a 15th level character. At 15th level, single-class wizards can cast double-empowered lightning bolts for the same average damage and at a greater range. The wiz5 / dragon master 10 only casts spells as a 10th level wizard and therefore does not have access to double-empowered lightning bolts yet. Dragon Wing: This ability is gained at minimum 10th character level and grants a flying movement that is considerably worse than the one granted by the Fly spell. The Fly spell lasts for one hour and 40 minutes at 10th caster level. This is usually more than enough time to face all the encounters that the PCs want to face in a given day. The only benefit of this ability over Fly is that it can be used at will. Spell Resistance: The maximum spell resistance granted by this ability is 22. A 15th level spellcaster needs only to roll a 7 or better to defeat it even if he doesn't have Spell Penetration. For comparison, a 15th level cleric can grant the character a spell resistance of 27 by casting a 5th level spell. I therefore think that this ability is rather weak. Frightful Presence: This is essentially the same as the 4th level spell Fear except that it affects a spherical area instead of a cone and it has a reduced effect against creatures with 5 or more HD compared to the spell. Dragon Shape: This is similar to the Shapechange spell except that it is limited to dragon shapes. I might allow some extras with this power, such as the ability to use Dragon Breath and Frightful Presence without expending uses per day while in dragon shape(Rather than grant the breath weapon of an actual dragon like the previous version does. For a red dragon that would be 20d10) My conclusion is that this prestige class is not overpowered. If you disagree with my analysis, please say so. -- Retan
