Dragon Mount feat?

And mind you, Dragon Mount (Draconomicon) only gives you a dragonnel as a special mount. You can get a special mount dragon even without this feat, with options including dragonnel, wyvern, spiked felldrake and bronze/silver/gold dragons.

Me? I took a page from the variant special mounts section in the DMG and allow a paladin to have (effectively) a half-dragon warhorse as a special mount (reduce the effective paladin level by 3 for these purposes).

Oh, there's also the drakkensteed in Dragon Magic,

There is also the Leadership feat. I can't recall if the DMG lists dragons specifically, but it would allow for a Dragon companion.

Dragons have a preeety high ECL though.

Large dragons:
Juvenile Green: ECL 20.
Very Young Red: ECL 15.
Young Red: ECL 19.
Very Young Gold: ECL 16.
Young Gold: ECL 20.

If you're playing a small character, I don't care about you.

I was wondering about that. A 16th level paladin can have a very young wrymling gold dragon, that's an ECL 16 creature. AND he gets to add on a few mount abilities on top of that. Considering the best leadership can give you is a character 2 levels lower than yourself, that seems very strong.

But isn't there a rule that says a Dragon doesn't get EXP and only gets more powerful through it's age. In a typical campaign your dragon stays in the same age category wheres a non-draconian cohort earns EXP and gets new levels just as you do.

Oh and leadership gives you much more. Don't forget your low level followers, they can be members in different churches, guilds, town council, and many other groups which can be very handy (I love to play the influence game) ;-)

BTW, the Improved Cohort feat from Heroes of Battle gives your cohort from Leadership a maximum level of your level minus one.

So if you get your dragon mount at level 16 and eventually become level 20 your dragon will still be ECL 16. Your (non dragon) cohort can be level 19 by then.

EDIT: I also remember a Dragon Magazine article about Dragons as mounts. Probably with some feats there too, but I don't remember any details or what issue.

No rule about Dragons not getting XP. But if it ages and the new HD and LA push it beyond the limit, it will be frozen without further XP until your character level is 2 higher than the dragon's ECL.
