Message: <blockquote data-quote="Flying Toaster" data-source="post: 9741702" data-attributes="member: 7052563">I wonder how closely “New Jobs for Demi-Humans” matched the expanded rules for demi-humans in Unearthed Arcana, released this year (1985).  That book became notorious for errors and misprints, and when we reach November 1985 there will be a Dragon article of UA errata and rules clarifications.  I am not sure how many of those made it into subsequent printings of UA, or which version I owned back then.  The class restrictions for demi-humans seemed to make no sense unless you took Tolkien as a model (i.e. no dwarvish spellcasters), and we all know EGG would never do that, right? <img class="smilie smilie--emoji" alt="😉" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f609.png" title="Winking face    :wink:" data-shortname=":wink:" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" /> I always enjoyed Katharine Kerr’s articles and learned a lot from them.  They had a grounding in actual history and society that official D&D never really had, despite its origins as a medieval war game. I also liked the Ecology monster articles, even if they tended to encourage a trend I call “illithidization” - taking a weird D&D original creation like the aboleth, beholder, or mind flayer, and then dispelling some of the mystery with convoluted “realistic” explanations, elaborate lore, and endless iterations of the basic monster.</blockquote>
