Dragon size

What would you say is the average length (head to tail) of a colossal red dragon? I need a rough estimate to write into a Story Hour. Cheers.

Hmmmm... okay. Thanks.

I've always imagined Dragons that old to be a lot bigger...

Anyway - Rule Zero rears its pretty little face...

Agreed... those numbers in the MM are for your average everyday colossal dragon... but what about one that has a permanent Enlarge on itself?

And just because an average dragon is 80ft. long, doesn't mean there aren't 120ft. long ones...

good good. Thought I might get lynched by rule lawyers for saying a dragon was well over 200ft long...

It is Klauth though (Forgotten Realms big red one), so i suppose its okay. Just wanted to get across the threat the characters were facing...

I think the MM description is just for combat purposes and how much space they should take up on a grid-map ... other wise a dragon might take up the whole map

Well now...

Take a good look at your car.

That's about the size of its head.

Now, take a look at the block your house is on.

That is its body...

all we know is that they're bigger than 64 ft. Of course, in 2e, said dragon would be ~250ft. long. You could always claim "In the absense of other sources...:D" Although the 40x80 facing would be difficult to explain.

Having said that, if any of you are familiar with Klauth, what size would you say he is? I'd love to say he's bordering on about 350ft or more, but 200ft seemed safe enough at the time (damn my weakling nerve)...

but then again, this is for a story hour, so I do want to convey what Klauth is all about - and it is Forgotten Realms - so he could be utterly huge.

Suggestions? And also, if you start shouting sizes every which way, give something to compare it to, like a couple of football pitches or whatever - I'm starting to lose focus with thinking in such big terms.

Also- dont forget the rules for size only include head and body. It does not take into account the creature's tail length. Check the definition/rules for size.
