"Dragon" to scale

First Post
We visited the Museum of Natural History last week, and I was thrilled to see the life-sized dino model they had.

In the excitement of showing everything to our 2-year-old, I forgot I had brought the camera. As we were about to leave, I remembered. I grabbed the camera, ran back through some of the exhibits and snapped some photos. Unfortunately in my haste I took some aweful shots. This dino is really the only one that came out decent and with something to show the scale.

The glass doors just behind the dino are about 8' tall. I could stand under the dino without my head touching its belly. So, with that reference, I marked the estimated heights on the image.

Now imagine this creature was a dragon, with wings and scales. Now run up to it and attack with swords and axes.

Standing in the same room with the above dino was very cool. It really put the things we regularly do in D&D in perspective.

And people doubt the mechanic of dragonfear... :D

Thanks, Q! I need to revisit a dinosaur reconstruction myself sometime to get my feel for that back. The last time I saw one was about 10 years ago, and it's hazy in my memory...

It's been a while since I've been there (which is sad because work is a 5 minute walk away) but that might be in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum here in DC.

Is it, Q?

Fernbank is quite cool too. I used to take field trips there in elementary school. (Stone Mt.)

Raleigh, NC.

The display is based on some fossils and foot prints found (I think) in Texas. Note the bite taken out of the dino's rump. A carnivore about 1/4 the big guy's size did that (gutsy carni). The carni's skeleton is opposite the herbi's model, but my pic of it came out dark.

I took an AP physics class there WAAAAYY back in high school (shamrock).

Thanks Quasqueton,

It background looks kinda like Fernbank, but I suppose a lot of them look similar.

Yeah, there are some cool things there that put things into perspective. Let me see if I can dig up some old photos this weekend of some of the critters that really fascinate me, and until then check out the Smithsonian dinosaur pictures on their site.

I think it's cute and I want one as a pet!!!

:)

Seriously though, the Museum of Science Boston has a Dino model like this and I never thought of it as being to scale with a dragon, but now that you mention it, I might have to go back there and stand under it and look at it from the D&D angle.

Not to hijack, but, dude! You went to elementary school in Stone Mt? So did I!

Edit--so that this isn't a total hijack,

That's a really cool picture, Quasqueton! It really helps one to visualize things!
