Deadly Denizens Volume II September Art Preview #3. One of Volume II's most powerful denizens is the Koschei. If you've seen my Kickstarter page, then you've probably already seen it. However, I'll provide more details. In the simplest terms, the Koschei is a sorcerer lich.
Based on Slavic folklore and is most likely the inspiration for the Lich, the Koschei has the same immunities and rejuvenating abilities as the Lich. However, as a sorcerer, it will have the ability to enhance its spells with its two metamagic features: Heighten and Quickened. Its basic attack, Shadow Blast, is quite deadly. Aside from dealing 21 (6d6) necrotic damage, each hit reduces the target's Strength by 1d6. And it can make two such attacks per turn.
The Koschei will come in 3 versions: a lesser version (CR 14), a standard one (CR 22), and Koschei the Deathless (CR 26)!

The varcolac, from Slavic folklore, is our fourth art preview for September, a nocturnal monstrosity with an insatiable thirst for blood and the ability to hunt in total darkness using echolocation. Its blood-curdling howl can paralyze victims with sheer fear, leaving them defenseless. The varcolac's bite inflicts a gruesome curse that causes confusion and, in humanoids, a grotesque transformation into a new varcolac, while non-humanoids suffer an agonizing death.
