Dragonmarks: The 13th Mark, The Mark of the Dead

First Post
The Mark of Death. A dead mark on Eberron, exuse the pun. Destroyed along with the House of Vol over 1500 years ago. Only one remaining living creature bears the mark, if you could call her living that is.

Vol, the Half Elf Half Dragon Lich Wizard. Strangly enough, the Mark of the Dead, does not function on an unliving creature.

This thread is to discuss possible adventure/story elements that we can use in our games involving the 13th mark.

Some of the possiblities to involve this mark in your game follows.

--Could be long lost blood relatives of the Vol be on Xen'drik? Perhaps Elves that returned to Xen'drik after the mark Manifested?

--An Adventuring party finds an artifact that is the key to great riches and power. Through months of arcane study and lore they discover that the artifact can only be activated by an elf or half-elf that wields the 13th Mark. They must research into the mark, and might stumble upon The Blood of Vol and maybe even the truth. Could a Wish spell return Vol to live from Lichdom and reactivate the mark?

--Vol had a twin sister. A very very rare thing for Elves. Her sister was also blessed with the mark. Her sister, born normally, not a half dragon, was also hidden away in the destruction of Vol. Her mark hidden and sealed by magic. Centuries later her decendant gives birth to a new pair of elven twins. Both of which bear the Mark of Death!

--Some wizards in the Arcane Congress belive that the Dragonmarks are a result of eberron shards and belive that with the proper magical formulae and spells they can create, or ressurect a dragonmark. They hire an adventuring party to gather a large amount of Eberron Shards and find their way to the Elven nation of Aerenal to steal and gather remains of a dragonmarked Vol, or to convince a Deathless to help them find a possible living Heir of Vol.

--The Mournland is the biggest symbol of death in Khorvair. Could the tragic event have been caused by a living Dragonmarked with the Mark of Death? Perhaps the purple glow in the Glowing Chasm is a Geographic Dragonmark identical to the legendary 13th mark. If so, will destroying the mark or dispelling it heal the mournland and dispell the grey mist?

Here's a few 13th mark hooks that I might use:

--Though Vol carries the inactive mark of Death, it is too late to revive the mark; the mystical essence that creates dragonmarks of Death is no more. The draconic prophesy, however, demands a 13th dragonmark, and the imbalance threatens to destabilize the entirety of creation. Nobody on Khorvaire knows how to create a new dragonmark, but the dragons of Argonnessen know of a connection between Siberys shards and the origin of dragonmarks on Khorvaire.

--The Mark of Death is intimately connected with the fate of Dal Quor. Was it an aberrant mark all along? The dark of the mystery might only be revealed in the ruins of Xen'drik where the cataclysm 40,000 years ago knocked Dal Duor out of alignment with Eberron. Perhaps the 13th mark was intended to appear on the Quori instead of the elves, but those Quori were absent when marks finally appeared. Quori spirits now inhabit Eberron, but are the Kalashtar or the Inspired the chosen of the draconic prophesy?

I'm also interested in figuring out what the connection between the warforged, the giants, and the dragons is, but I haven't filled that out too much yet. The docent components found on Xen'drik really point to some kind of sinister imitation on the part of house Cannith to create the warforged. For 2500 years, there has been a gap in the draconic prophecy regarding dragonmarks, are warforged the missing link that will carry the final mark?

-- The unthinkable has happened. A Dragonmark has appeared on a Warforged. Nobody knows how or why this has happened, but the Dragonmark has a very erie similarity to that of a House Cannith Artificer that dissapeared in Sharn a few weeks ago. Could there have been an accident at the secret Cannith Forge under sharn?
