My mother was "Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons" back in the early 80's and got me a copy of Dragonraid for Christmas the year it came out. I played it quite a bit back then with friends from church, and as an RPG, it pretty much played just like you've described in your review. It's very basic, and a little clunky at times, but pretty fun. Considering how young the hobby was in 1984, Dragonraid felt a lot like other games I was playing at the time. As a young Christian, I appreciated knowing that there were other believers out there who also liked fantasy, Tolkien and CS Lewis. (Narnia is obviously a HUGE inspiration for Dragonraid!). As I got older, I realized what a great teaching tool Dragonraid really is. I have run it for numerous youth groups, and it does an excellent job of achieving its stated goals. My classes latched right on to the Wordrune concept. Who wouldn't want to be able to effectively cast "haste" on themselves at will just by reciting a memorized passage of scripture? My brother is also a church youth leader, and he has made extensive use of Dragonraid in his ministry as well. Too bad you didn't get to listen to that cassette. There's some great stuff on there. Some very well produced "radio drama" that helps set the tone of Dragonraid, as well as a nice introduction to the basic resolution system. This was a real innovation back in 1984! No other RPG at the time had audio advice on how to play the game. Even today, people comment on how hard it is for new players to learn how to play RPG's. ALS had already addressed this issue back in 1984! Excellent review. You gave a very fair and balanced commentary on this often trivialized game/tool. I very much appreciated this review.
