Dragon's 35th Birthday, which one is your favorite?

darjr

I crit!
At WotC's site I find this wonderful article about a little bit of history for Dragon Magazine by Steve Winter.

He goes on to describe his favorite issue and how it changed his life.

I don't know if I can pick a favorite, I vividly remember the 100th issue, though I can't now recall any of the articles for certain. I use to own a large collection, but they have disappeared, sometime between the beginning of high school and college.

If I was forced to pick one now it might be the one with Omega World in it, does that count?

The Jester, the Nine Hells, The Witch....those are the ones that still stick in my mind all these years later. And look, we are getting two of them....

I think the first Dragon I bought was #96. It was an April Fools issue and had the Quazar dragon, I think.

Many other favorite early articles came from Best of Dragon. I remember bringing one to pre-calculus class, it had an article on tesseracts and the teacher had said we'd get extra credit if we could draw a fourth dimensional cube. That effort would have been better spent doing the actual studying and homework, but I brought the magazine to class plus a whole bunch of drawings and the teacher asked to see the magazine. I did not consider that possibility. You can imagine the thoughts going through my mind when he turned the pages and the next article was: The Politics of Hell. Whatever he thought he didn't say anything, but none of my drawings were close to the real thing.

I also remember bringing mine to school, so many players were recruited by that magazine during that time, I think because of articles like: The Politics of Hell.

I think Age of Worms (admittedly Dungeon) set off the height of Dragon and Dungeon magazines. The idea of an adventure path was a new concept and integrating Dragon into it encouraged the idea that players and DMs collaborated to make a campaign and game world. For me, that was the height of the magazines.

My favourite was Dragon #4 - my first RPG purchase (along with Metamorphosis Alpha, 2x d20 and News from Bree 20).

It was an EPT special issue, and I loved the articles, the evocative stories, the featured EPT monsters (Mihalli have since turned up in one form or another in pretty much every campaign I've ever run).

So it's Dragon #4 for me!

I really liked issue 100. The cover really blew me away at the time. The Greyhawk story by Gary and the cool 3 level chess article. I still pull it out every couple of years to give it a read.

I remember the best of the dragon number 3-gold cover-had a remake of the Monk, and a revamp of the bard IIRC. I don't know which issue had it, but there was a parody of the Jester-maybe wormy style(?) that was full of awesome puns!
