Dragons are not Open Game Content?

OK, if I'm missing something obvious, I apologize (and if this has already been discussed at length, if someone could point me to that thread instead).

So, I just needed to do some reference on a dragon's stats, so I went to the System Reference Document, only to discover that the entry for Dragons does not appear under the Monsters (D) document.

When did dragons get taken out of the SRD? I knew product identity monsters like mind flayers an beholders were out, but DRAGONS? They are the single most commonly recognized monster in the game. Is this a recent change or something I just have never noticed before? Because there are more than a few d20 products that refer to dragons out already, and the removal of their basic stats pretty much limits all uses of dragons in the future, too. I mean, technically, you can't even place a dragon in a published adventure now (unless you make up entirely new stats for it).

I'm hoping I am just being stupidly oblivious to something, but I can't see how taking dragons out of the SRD is anything but crippling to the Open Game concept.

Thanks. I had that feeling that I was clearly out of the loop on this, but I couldn't wrap my brain around it. The fact is, on some level, I could actually see someone in the Hasbro legal office saying "Dragons are what makes it Dungeons & DRAGONS, and we have to protect that!"

It is odd that the OGF is up-to-date enough to take the dragons out of Monsters (D), but not enought to have the Dragons file...

The open gaming foundation has not been in charge of the open gaming license for about a year now. I agree that someone at the OGF really needs to make notice of this fact.

By "someone," you mean Ryan S Dancey?

He's coming around to update that web site, even though he is busy with other projects like OrganizedPlay.

They updated it not too long ago, but failed to add the dragons.

You wouldn't happen to know how he says OrganizedPlay is doing, by chance? I've always had a great deal of respect for Ryan, and it's always nice to know whether his business ventures are doing well for him.

I had heard in another thread that OP wasn't doing that well, but the person posting said information didn't strike me as terribly reputable, and certainly ddn't seem to like Ryan overmuch, so I don't put much stock in it.

Did OP take over the Living RPGA games? I know PC had mentioned something about this recently, but I can't recall the exacts. I believe that's where the disparaging comment I read was from (that thread, not PC, of course).

EDIT: Ahh, here we are. In this thread right here, towards the middle and bottom , you'll see discussion of OP, but no concrete information from anyone. A poster by the name of village6, with a whopping 4 posts, says that he thinks that OP will be in financial trouble, based on his belief that LC players are rapidly shrinking. In other words, "nobody knows anything", as the famous saying goes.
