Dragon's Lair on DVD!

So, I was browsing around at Best Buy today when, from out of nowhere, this notorious quarter-gobbler from the early 80's jumps into my hands and demands to be bought. Yep, the video game Dragon's Lair can now be played with your DVD controller. It's packaged in a boxed set along with Dragon's Lair 2 and Space Ace. At only $40 for the set, I was on it like a mullet on a NASCAR fan. For some reason, my DVD player didn't care for it - it kept jumping to the wrong scenes for some reason. However, I switched over to my PS2 and had no problem. If you pumped far too many quarters into one or more of these games in your youth like I did, you'll be wanting this in your DVD collection. My only complaint is that the scene transition when you make a move is a little abrupt, but I guess that's down to the way DVD players work. Well, and the aforementioned problem with my player not hitting the right scenes - I don't know if that's a problem with the player or the disk. Anyway, once I got it going properly, I hunkered down and played for a couple of hours straight. Don Bluth kicks much ass, and the Lizard King is a grade A punk.

My friend has it and we played. We where having a blast until we hit the scene where the floor is electrified with the empty throne and crystal ball. The DVD wouldn't register the third move, so we couldn't finish the game, we kept trying that scene for like 200 times.

Frustrating...

Hmm, that is weird. On my DVD player, a problem spot was where the wall is forming, and you have to jump through the hole before it closes. I did that, it would play the victory music as Dirk ran through the door...and then the skeletal Dirk scene appeared and made me try again...and again...and again. Also, on DL2, I would run out of the house while being pursued by Dirk's mother-in-law - at which point, I was shown a death scene of Dirk being swallowed by a snake. Weird, but these all cleared up on my Playstation 2.

Well, since I'm not the only one who had trouble, I don't know if I recommend this or not. Maybe if you have a PS2, or if you're just feeling lucky.

Sweet! Netflix has these titles!

Now, after all these years, I can help Dirk get his sword back from that friggin magnetic treasure cauldron thing.

One of the problems we faced in developing DragonsLair was that the search time on the LazerDisc players was sooo slow, it didn't really allow for an interactive, arcade-type game.

The way we got around this was by having the scene play straight through without interruption as long as you did just the right thing. If you did the wrong thing, there was a delay as the sytem searched to display a (hopefully) comic death scene.

We had actually done some scenes before we hit on this and, in those, you could see the slow search.
