Drid/ranger animal companion(s)

A druid/ranger can stack his effective levels in animal companion to determine the power of his animal companion. But is he obligated to do so? Or can a druid1/ranger4 have two animal companions, once for each class (and each less powerful than a single companion would be)?

A druid/ranger can stack his effective levels in animal companion to determine the power of his animal companion. But is he obligated to do so?

Yes, by the core rules. (Note the leadership penalty for having an animal compnaion; you're only supposed to have one "special buddy.")

That said, if you have a good story for it and it suits your campaign, I say have at and let it fly.
