DRM problem - can anyone help?

I have just posted the following to Adobe's forums. The file in question is Malhavoc's "Hyperconscious" (long version), and the web site is of course drivethrurpg.

My intention here is to get help with a specific problem, NOT to start another DRM flame war, but suffice to say this has changed my position on DRM from "grudgingly accepting" to "violently opposed".

I just tried to open a file with DRM features. This is a legitimate file that I can prove I paid for, and I didn't have any problems opening this file or similar files from the same site previously. Yet this time, it wanted me to activate Adobe Reader on my current computer (this never happened with other files that had the same DRM features). Okay, no problem; I went through the whole process and it tells me I have now activated Reader on my current computer.

Problem: Since I downloaded the file in question - to put it another way, after I first downloaded it, but before I most recently tried to open it - I had to practically rebuild my computer, with numerous new parts, and reinstall Windows and everything else from the ground up. Thus the file regards the machine it's on now as a different computer from the one it was originally installed on. So a screen comes up telling me that I need to activate Adobe Reader on my OLD computer (remember, I never had any problems opening these files on that machine), which NO LONGER EXISTS!!! I couldn't do this even if I wanted to.

In other words, DRM seems to have in effect, stolen something from me that I legitimately paid for!

What alternative is there here? How do I get this file working?

By the way, on the posting page, some of the buttons (for example, the ones for bold and italics) are black with no outline and the background is currently a very dark grey, rendering these buttons nearly invisible. This needs fixing.

I'll not say anything nasty about DRM, but simply point you to drivethru's faq. Scroll down a bit to "What can I do with my eBooks?" to get Adobe's customer service number for activation resets on new computer installs or hard drive formats: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/catalog/FAQ.php#quickstart

Good luck.

Edit: Next time you want Malhavoc goodness, you might want to check the White Wolf online store for real PDFs...

I recently bought a Flashing Blades suppliment from DTRPG, I thought hey only $3.50 and our GM has been looking for a real copy for ages. I downloaded on one machine transfered it to another (both activated), and it just wouldn't open. Took me ages to figure out why, seems the one I downloaded it on was version 6.02 of Acrobat, but the one I moved it too was 6.0. What made matters worse was the free file I got at the same time opened without any problem so I thought it was a problem with the file, plus when I did the Update option on 6.0 it said there were no new updates available.

In the end I had to download 6.01 install that, activate that, and then update it to 6.02...

DRM is a nightmare, I got it sorted in the end but without DRM there wouldn't have been a problem.

Anyway check you've got the most recent version of Acrobat, you shouldn't need to activate it on your old machine, just the current one.

Oh, I already have; since getting Hypercon that way, I've gotten "traditional" PDFs as Monte calls them, of Mystic Secrets, Grimoire II, and Book of Iron Might.
