Drow book and FL maps

I like that WotC put the forgotten locations maps into the new Drow book, along with encounters built to use them. That is the kind of stuff that makes my investments worth more money (as they are now more usable to me on an easy basis). I hope this is an idea that has legs.

Is that what those terrible maps were? Holy crap, they were... crap.

I was just looking for the DotU thread to make some comments, and I see that you conveniently started one here.

But in any case - no. No, I hope it doesn't have legs. Those "maps" (which were really just gridded splotches of color with random lines representing random walls in a completely haphazard location) were more than a little poor.

I'll try again. If they are going to release maps as products, then I'd like to see them used in more than 1 product.

As for the specific maps:

The actual quality of those particular maps may not be to your liking, but I can say that I have used them a lot for roleplaying encounters, more than I've used them for DDM skirmish. If you like maps, and use minis and grids, these are mostly quite useful for encounters. It is quite easy to draw new walls if you laminate them, or to use 3D walls I've built to create new walls. But, to each her own.

Seconded, I too enjoyed seeing them in there getting extra use. Perhaps they didn't "shrink" from poster-size too well to make an effective map for those that don't have the Fantastic Location maps? No, that's not the case. Just checked and they are clear and well done. Hmm, beauty must be in the eye of the beholder, and all that.

Just got my copy this morning and I thought the maps scaled pretty well. Personally I think it is an excellent idea and a shame that they didn't use more of the Fantastic Location maps in other source books. It may have helped to make the FL series more desirable for role players. As it is, there is a large question mark over the future of the FL range due to lack of interest. The biggest losers, of course, will be skirmishers.

Has anyone checked how the map links with D3? Is it really different? I just got my copy of Drow of the Underdark last night from Amazon.
