The losers were driven underground, where they were able to thrive in security from their upworld cousins. Over time, they evolved strange powers from the radiations and magic of the Underdark, but also became vulnerable to light from a long time spent deep in darkness. The worship of Lolth and other demons sounds more like a consequence of the drow's evil nature, rather than the converse.The FR origin story is, of course, much different, probably because of the FR's stronger emphasis on religion and the role of deities.
