Marvel's "DRUID": Warren Ellis/Leonard Manco If you are intrigued by the potential characterizations of druids along the thematic lines of Alan Moore's "Swamp Thing", you may want to take a look at this limited series that was published by Marvel in the late '90s in their exploration of launching Vertigo-like titles such as Hellstorm. "Druid" was a complete re-vamp of a second-rate mystic Marvel character originally called Dr. Druid. It is still to my mind one of the best re-interpretations of a comic book character since DC's Wonder Woman by George Perez or The Spectre by Jim Ostrander. The character of Anthony Ludgate is transformed from a parody to an absolute terror. The premise is that this character, tiring of his has-been status, appeals to the Celtic Triple-Goddess (Babh, Nemain, and Emain Macha, aka the Morrigu) in a forbidden ritual that will empower him with Her might and elevate him (and through him, Her worship) into a force to be counted among the world powers. The deity answers him with the intention that Ludgate use his newfound power to bring apocalypse to the world as an act of cleansing. I modeled a recent druid character under the influence of this work, starting him out as an innocent scholar rediscovering his spiritual roots iby exploring his dead mother's religious beliefs, and having him transform into what I was told was one of the creepiest druid characters ever seen in a campaign, a task more easily accomplished in this latest edition of DnD as his alignment evolved from neutral good to neutral evil. Read this limited series if you can get your hands on it. :)
