Druids animal companion - confusion

If a druids animal companion becomes a large magical beast is it no longer an animal? That is it cannot benefit from a druids animal growth spell?

The designers said its a copy and paste error. They are meant to be considered animals still and are eligible to receive growth from the animal growth spell.
