I would agree if you by "the german D&D" mean "the household name in fantasy gaming".

As for mechanics, Dark Eye is something else...
 

Household name and Tolkien inspired mediaeval-ish setting.
In Germany D&D was never really that widespread. If someone wanted to play a fantasy RPG they played DSA.
