Dungeon #138

Alzrius

The EN World kitten
The latest Dungeon arrived in my mailbox about fourteen hours ago. I'm only just now finding the time to give the break-down on it. Here's the skinny:

Editorial: Two Decades of Adventure, by Erik Mona - For his last editorial now that he's stepping out of the EiC chair for Dungeon, Erik looks back over the magazine's twenty-year history.

Prison Mail - Letters this month include asking for expanded rules on scaling adventures, a mistake in issue #136, and a request for an epic Adventure Path.

Urban Decay, by Amber E. Scott - In this adventure for 2nd-level PCs, a wererat is making sure that the city's waste disposal services are failing, allowing him the perfect cover to seize control of the city. Only the PCs can track him down and put an end to his (literally) foul plans.

The Weavers, by Richard Pett - Return to The Styes in this adventure for 10th-level characters! A kenku collector found a particularly hideous breed of spider on a recent foray, and brought it back with him to sell. Not realizing that he's now carrying its eggs, a plague of these evil spiders is set to be unleashed on the city...which is exactly what the chitines, coming after their stolen spider, want! A map, complete with coverage, of the entire Styes is given in the adventure. Sidebars cover the time the PCs have before the spiders overrun the city, the Styes most famous puppet show, Chitines and the demon prince they worship: Obox-Ob, and feats from Hordes of the Abyss that enemies have in this adventure. An appendix presents two new monsters: the bilge eel, and the hastendeath spider.

The Mud Sorcerer's Tomb, by Mike Shel, updated by the DUNGEON staff - The original adventure from Dungeon #37 returns, updated to 3.5, for 14th-level characters! When a tomb of one of the legendary Mud Sorcerers is uncovered, are the PCs brave enough to enter it? This tricky dungeon is filled with riddles, traps, and monsters that will confound, confuse, and kill many an unwary PC! Information is given on Knowledge (arcana, history, and religion) checks about the Mud Sorcerers. New monsters are presented over the course of the adventure, including the mud grue, Yurushyu's automaton, Majalor, and Tzolo's guardian. Sidebars cover mud rings, robe of warding, and mudships.

Challenge of Champions VI, by Johnathan M. Richards - In this adventure for PCs of any level, it's time for the Challenge of Champions to be held! PCs will once again have to compete with many other teams for a prize, and the fame, that comes with winning the Challenge!

Savage Tide Preview - Across seven pages, riddled with concept art, each adventure of the Savage Tide Adventure Path is laid out. Each adventure is given a large paragraph or two describing what happens, laying out the entire campaign ahead of time. This preview contains major spoilers for the entire Adventure Path, but also whets the appetite for it all the more!

Dungeoncraft: Running A Game is Hard to Do: Part 2, by Monte Cook - Here Monte talks about precision in combat, discussing things like DM's giving exact hit point figures or distances between creatures and objects. A sidebar discusses initiative in this regard.

The Cast: Strictly Legit, by Hal Maclean - Five descriptions (no stats) are given of monsters who've decided to try to live and work with humanity, rather than skulk in a dungeon. Each has two hooks given; one for if the monster really is friendly, and one if it's all a ruse.

The City: 100 Things Found in an Inn, by Jason Bulmahn - A table of one hundred items, conditions, or situations are given that characters can run into when checking into an inn for a night.

The Dungeon: Obstacle Traps, by Tim Hitchcock - Six new obstacle traps are given. Obstacle traps are traps that aren't hidden; they're easily seen, but no less easy to get around, particularly since many can be left off and then switched on by enemies. A sidebar gives two new trap properties: commnd word bypass and pull trap attack.

Critical Threat: Downer Tarantula, by Kyle Hunter - Downer of Downer is given here! Discussing his past, appearance, tactics, and development, Downer's stats are finally given, along with a sidebar detailing two new magic items that Downer has.

Cartoons - The Portent, by Peter Bergting; Mt. Zogon, by Tony Moseley; and Downer, by Kyle Stanley Hunter.

What monster book are chitines from?

Urban Decay sounds great for Ptolus.

I'm disheartened a little to hear that the Savage Tide starting city has canals. Hopefully they don't figure into the adventures much, so that it can be retrofitted to Freeport easily.

And let's see the cast of Mt. Zogon and Zogonia as Critical Threats!

That's been out of print for how many years now? Is the monster reprinted in Dungeon at least?

The 3.5 rules (including rules for using them as PCs) are in the FR accessory Underdark. Despite the branding, it's a very good (and mostly generic) suppliment for the Underdark.

Just to be conversational...I think they were introduced in the very late 2e adventure The Shattered Circle, a really nice, overlooked module for low level characters.

Thanks for the heads-up on Underdark, gribble. I need to check that book out.

While I'm not familiar with the original incarnation of the Mud Sorcerer's Tomb, it was a nifty touch in this new version to have an elemental savant devoted to Bwimb. *wide grin*

still waiting for my copy.

got all my copies of previous Dungeons on time since i became an ENnies judge....

hmmm... now that my part as a judge is over does that mean it is back to late delivery???

That may be so, but I'm not dropping $29 for a single monster. ;)

Hopefully the adventure works just fine with ettercaps instead.

I could be wrong, but aren't the stats for non-SRD monsters usually included as part of the adventures in Dungeon?
