Dungeon crawling RPG?

Hey guys, so I've rekindled my lover with the Phantasy Star Online series, specifically Phantasy Star 0 for DS. This got me hyped to make a homebrew for the series. However I don't really care about the roleplaying aspects of the game. Let's face it, it's a loot game. That's the reason why it's so addicting. Now I was thinking, what system could I possibly pair this with to get that loot type feeling.

I know 3.5/pathfinder is the obvious choice, but it just has such a heavy back end with rules I would not use because, again I just want a loot collecting game. 4e has a great system for combat heavy games, but the AEDU system doesn't necessarily fit the feel of phantasy star. I really would like a system that uses TP (basically MP) to power special attacks and techniques.

I think numenera would be a perfect fit, hell, even the game facilitates a 3 class system that has a very similar feel, but the cypher system revolves around single use items and a combat system that just doesn't seem to cut it with the loot aspect. So is there a simple game system out there that facilitates this? Should I just buckle down an create a new system or modified d20 system from the ground up or is there something else?

Would you describe the "loot type feeling?" I watched a YouTube of PSO, and definitely did not get the feeling.

Be wary: table RPGs do some things well and some things not-so-well. I suspect that maintaining video game addictiveness is one thing that TRPGs don't do well.

Classic D&D would work. It can be used for a deep, immersive role playing game, too, but the rules are basically just made to focus on dungeon crawls and what we used to call "kill the monster, get the treasure".

You want old school Dungeon crawling? Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Hands down the best at the crazy appendix N pulp out there. Not much official content, but the fan zine community has a ton of stuff for this RPG.
