I'm just going to link to this, because I saw it, and ... D&D.

Personally, I like to keep my videogames and TTRPGs separate, but it might be of interest to others!

Sometimes I think Hasbro wants to create an universal d20 system for all the genres to publish adaptations of famous franchises (videogames, superheroes comics, movies..).

About the lore or background of Destiny, I find nothing special after knowing lots of franchises like that.

What a strange choice. I feel like Destiny could make for a really cool RPG, but D&D is not the right system for it, in my opinion.

WotC did this a long long time ago in a previous decade. I refer to it as the "All D20 All The Time!" era and it was absolutely terrible!!! It was so bad reading dozens of IPs that were shoehorned into the D20 systems mechanics. None of them ever had the ability to properly emulate the IPs they were based on. I'm so happy that era is dead and gone!

I have also said several times d20 isn't ready to be totally compatible among all the different genres. If you allow firearms and high-tech the power balance is broken. A simple 1 hit-dice goblin with extra "gear level" become too dangerous. Let's imagine a group of goblings, all with the same monster stats but different level of item: only an axe and a shield, a sniper rifle from the top of a tree or roof, with a exo-suit (like in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare), a powered armor (Fallout, Anthem) or a Mecha (Titanfall or the B.R.U.T.E from Fortnite: Battle Royal). These cases can't be the same level of challenging ratin or XP rewards. With the "right" toys the enemies are more powerful than with a monster template.

Don't blame me if I say WotC would rather to use an universal system. If WotC in a near future recover the licence for a new Star War RPG, why to use a different system? New players don't like to learn new rules but RPGs with low level of crunch, and WotC is selling rehush lore and updated crunch. Selling RPGs with one system players are used is easier than starting from zero all the rules.

Two things; WotC has shown little indication at all that they would prefer a universal system. There is a few rules in the DMG to play other genres, and an Unearthed Arcana for modern-style games, and that's it. They've rarely even mentioned it; they're focus is almost entirely on the typical fantasy genre, and the recent release of Tasha's is building even more layers on that game style, not diverting from it.

Second, Hasbro has the Star Wars license right now. It was even extended beyond 2020.

Hasbro has got the licence rights for the toys, but not for the TTRPG, this is now being published by Asmodee/Edgeent. Think about that, if Hasbro is making money with the toys of comic superheroes, why not also a TTRPG of superheroes? Or other franchises, for example videogames (Overwatch, Fortnite..). Don't you know the advice "not put all the eggs in one basket"? WotC should publish other TTRPG and not only D&D.

What would be your commercial strategy if you were Hasbro/WotC?

I was tracking this when it first came out, since I love the Destiny lore. But I'm thinking of using Cortex Prime instead of 5e, though running it on Fantasy Grounds did cross my mind....
