In the book "Sorcerer-Kings" it told Athas is in an alternate material plane, like Eberron, and in the ethereal plane there were "demiplanes". This could allow neighbour widlspaces where we could add all the elements we wanted, for example radiant dragonborns. Other thing told in the sourcebooks is about like "living vortices" as the way used by the SKs to give divine magic to the templars, and the living vortices had disappared, maybe extinted. Has Athasian sun changed its color because is older or aged in the different ages? Is there any planar gate in any Athasian moon, Guthay? What if the silkwyrm and spinewyrms aren't native species from Athas? Maybe there are xephs in Athas who could survive the cleasing wars because they build hidden vaults, and from here they could create an underground civilitation with empty spaces for farms thanks artificial light created by psionic. Maybe they created some harmless elemental ooze that collect energy from the sun, this is sent to the undergroud xeph cities in exchange of psionic power. * My opinion is if TSR creators wanted DS was played in epic levels, beyond 20, then only seven city-states was too small space for the plot. Today players from 2025 y want urban zones to be megalopolis like Gotham-City or Metropolis from DC or the cities from the saga "Grand Thief Auto". * And it is strange because SKs are ruling during centuries and almost nothing happen but when "the age of heroes starts" they begin to fall like flies, and several of them don't survive in the end of the novels. * What if there were wood and metal elemental lords but these were killed during any conflict? * What if there is a secret gith empire, but their queen isn't a lich but a Lovecraft abomination with draconian traits? These would be more civiliced than the Athasian giths we know. * Would want the deities of the rest of multiverse Athaspace was locked because the Athasians could be a possible menace style "Kratos ghost of Sparta"? * The mephlings from 3.5 Planar Handbook should be easy to be included into DS. We can say they come from elemental planes, usually sent as gifts by some figh-bish from the elemental planes. Other reason could be an almost failed reincarnation spell, or a human being polymorphed because some humilliating punishment.
