You may find this link to be of some use: Rogue Eidolon's Guide to Fighters - Pathfinder_OGC Check out the "Defender of the weak" section. Generally, for a sword and board fighter I think you're best best is going to be two weapon fighting, improved shield bash, and power attack. It's not intuitive, but with improved shield bash and twf you can open up a whole line of feats that let you keep the defensive capabilities of the shield while using it to plunk people over the head (building up to shield mastery that lets you use the shield's AC enhancement bonus as a bonus to attack and damage). A light spiked steel shield would generally be best for this tactic since you can wield it in your off hand as a light weapon. You'll need a dex of 15 or greater to make use of twf, so to make full use of that dex bonus you'll prolly should stick with fighter in the main for getting the armor training that allows you to have a higher dex bonus in armor. Dwarves can use the dwarven waraxe in one hand as a martial weapon, so you may consider using that (though they'll prolly not be as common as battleaxes). Warhammer could also be used. I've found that the step up feat tree when paired with stand still can effectively glue enemy spellcasters in place (and is really nasty when your own spellcaster turns antimagic field on- really gimped a boss I sent after some of my pcs once). Other issues to worry about, saves (especially will saves) and movement (flying, getting out of walls of force, etc), so be sure to figure those in.
