Dying and coming back

Dying and coming back 1 level less?

So my wizard died in one of our encounters tonight. Do you still come back with a new character one level less than before? I cannot find anything in the DMG about that.

He said "new" character, I don't think he's talking about losing a level when you die.

I think what's going on is that you are confusing someone's houserule from either 4E or 3E with an official rule. There isn't (nor has there been) a written rule that says you create a new character 1 level less than what you had.

Quite often in a campaign, many DMs might have houserules that allow players to roll up a new character at an increased level, often based on the lowest level of the party, or lower level than what you had, or whatever. This has never been an official rule.

You start at level 1, unless your DM tells you that you can start at a higher level.

Actually that is wrong this is no houserule. On page 42 of the 3.5 DMG it says, "Under most circumstances, a new character should begin play at the beginning of the level lower than the player's previous PC."

So again I ask, in 4e does your character start at 1 level less still? I cannot find any rules on this.

DMG p.30

Don’t penalize a new character in the group. The new member should start at the same level as the rest of the party and have similar gear.

I'm pretty sure that you can rule that they come back one level lower, but I'd certainly give my player the stink eye if he tried that.

Player: "Well, Boromir died, meet Bovomir!"
Me: "You just changed one level. You expect me to let you play that?"
Player: "One letter and one level. God, pay attention."

:hmm:
