Earth Elemental Glide

The Earth Glide ability of the earth elemental says that it can move through stone and ground as easily as flying through the air. Does that mean it can move halfway into the ground and hence get cover from the earth? Or even just stick its head out and get Improved Cover?

I have a half gnome/earth elemental NPC that uses Glide just like that. Attacks from partial cover all the time, and often retreats to full cover.
