Combat with an Elder Earth Elemental (I apologize for resurrecting such an old thread, but it seemed appropriate because this thread provides some context for my questions.) In my campaign tonight I put an EEE up against a party of (mostly) 10th level characters (and about 6 of them, too!). I realize that the EEE is doomed to lose, but I had a few problems with the way things were done. 1A. After the EEE is known to the party, it sinks into the ground. Each round thereafter it reaches out and makes an attack. Assuming it has tremorsense (as everyone above seems to have house-ruled as well), does it have to roll the 50% miss chance that the target gets for total concealment if the EEE stays inside the walls or floor? Why or why not? (I allowed the players to talk me into requiring the roll. I think the analogy of vision from underwater being obscuring as the surface is crossed seemed apropos.) 1B. If the EEE needs to expose at least part of its body to avoid the above miss chance, what is its AC while exposed? I'm thinking that a 15'x15' creature that extends 5' out of the wall should not be considered "Huge" for AC penalty purposes. Or maybe the size modifier depends on whether the attacker can see the "broad side of the barn" or only see the 5' of the creature from the side? 2. If an opponent is levitate'ing 1 inch off the ground and uses the ground to move along periodically (is this even possible?), does the act of touching the ground or a wall allow the EEE to target the creature using the tremorsense ability? What would the attack modifiers be? 3A. Can readied ray spells be targeted at an appendage when it quickly appears and disappears during the EEE's attack routine? If so, what is its AC? I was allowing readied actions to hit the creature by targeting the appendage, but I was using the base AC. I'm thinking now that the AC should be higher for the appendage (the appendage is NOT size Huge, and it's Dex modifier should be much higher than the EEE's base Dex; sort of along the lines of the attack-a-worn-or-held-item rules). 3B. If acid or oil is thrown onto an EEE in round 1, is the acid or oil still coating its appendage when it retreats into the rock and comes out again on round 2? (I ruled that it was.) This was the rogue's idea for applying acid and fire damage to the EEE (since her bow was not doing enough damage to penetrate DR). (Edited to add numbers to my questions for easy reference in replies.) As I said, I apologize for reviving such an old thread. A search here didn't being up any other threads more relevant to my questions. Thanks in advance for your help!
