Here is my synopsis, followed by the attachment for the 10-page writing sample (for those who enjoy being tortured)... “The Dragonmark Curse” begins two years after the Last War and follows the adventures of GREGOR (male human fighter), an Inquisitive who lives and works in the city of Sharn. GREGOR investigates the murder of IAN, an old Cyran army friend. GREGOR uncovers a startling revelation: his wife and daughter survived the Day of Mourning. For the past four years, GREGOR believed his family perished the day Cyre died. GREGOR’S old commanding officer from the army days, TEAGUE, arranged IAN’S murder. GREGOR survives an assassin’s attack and learns what IAN discovered. On one of his trips to Xen’drik, IAN (a human explorer who worked for both Morgrave University and PRINCE OARGEV) discovered an ancient draconic prophecy. The prophecy described five individuals who collectively form the “Hand of Siberys,” and who are destined to manifest a Siberys dragonmark. According to prophecy, the Hand of Siberys would one day topple the dragonmarked houses. The prophecy led IAN to the Mournland where he discovered GREGOR’S wife and daughter alive, along with a handful of other slaves. During the past four years, MIRA and IRENA served as slaves to the warforged LORD OF BLADES. Ian returned with proof and contacted GREGOR. Armed with the truth, GREGOR launches a rescue effort to save his family. He gathers three survivors from his old army unit, including VIK (male personality warforged fighter), DOC RASMUS (male dwarf wizard), and RAELLE (female changeling thief). Since the end of the Last War, VIK has struggled to adapt to civilian life. In addition to helping GREGOR, he hopes to learn about the LORD OF BLADES. RAELLE wants to see for herself what has become of their homeland, and she wants to have a chance to kill TEAGUE. The group prepares to enter the Mournland. First, they travel by lightning rail from Sharn to New Cyre to gain support from PRINCE OARGEV (last scion of the Cyran royal line). Two groups oppose GREGOR. Both seek to retrieve MIRA and IRENA first. TEAGUE (male human fighter, commander of GREGOR’S Cyran special forces unit) works with IKAR of Ikar’s Salvage. Based on information from IAN, OARGEV hired IKAR and TEAGUE to rescue the Hand of Siberys from the Mournland. According to prophecy, the Hand of Siberys is destined to ruin the dragonmarked houses. OARGEV seeks revenge against the dragonmarked houses he believes betrayed Cyre on the Day of Mourning. TEAGUE, eager for revenge, blames GREGOR for the two years their unit spent in POW camp. GREGOR considers OARGEV a friend and a patriot, but is unaware of TEAGUE’S employment. KHALISTA d’PHIARLAN (female elf wizard) leads the group representing a coalition of three dragonmarked houses (Phiarlan, Cannith, and Medani). These houses fear the prophecy’s fulfillment. KHALISTA’S group includes a pair of halfling brothers (thieves), a corrupt cleric of Aureon (male human), and an artificer from Morgrave University (accompanied by a pair of iron defender constructs). GREGOR’S group arrives in New Cyre only to learn TEAGUE works for the PRINCE. A fight between GREGOR’S band and TEAGUE’S mercenaries erupts in OARGEV’S mansion. GREGOR and his friends escape, leaving behind shattered chandeliers, a burning mansion, and a furious Cyran prince. From New Cyre, GREGOR’S group travels by lightning rail towards the Mournland. Unfortunately, KHALISTA’S group occupies the train and ambushes GREGOR. A running battle erupts on and around the train, and a magical clash of summoned elementals forces the train from its conductor stones. The train smashes into a ravine in a ruined heap. Mounted on Valenar riding horses, TEAGUE’S group has already entered the Mournland and prepared an ambush. Inside the Mournland, GREGOR’S group survives an encounter with a living spell and a battlefield of dead soldiers locked in eternal combat. The heroes spend the night in a ruined town. TEAGUE’S band launches an ambush. A nearby carcass crab awakens and attacks. GREGOR and friends escape. GREGOR and his friends reach the citadel of the LORD OF BLADES (located near the ruins of Metrol). TEAGUE’S group and KHALISTA’S group arrive at nearly the same time. The LORD OF BLADES arrives, almost as if he expected an attempt to rescue his slaves. VIK challenges the LORD OF BLADES to a duel to allow his friends an escape. TEAGUE, IKAR, and KHALISTA flee. IKAR flees. TEAGUE and KHALISTA pursue GREGOR. GREGOR’S group finds and frees his wife, daughter, and slaves. On a ruined bridge, GREGOR fights TEAGUE. KHALISTA uses the distraction and attacks. RAELLE and KHALISTA fight and kill each other. GREGOR wins his fight by forcing TEAGUE from the bridge. GREGOR, DOC, IRENA, and MIRA begin their long journey back to Sharn and a new life.
