Hey folks, I am just about to begin a 9th level Eberron game and I was hoping to hone some of my own ideas and steal some of yours to make it a better experience for me and my players. The game is play by post, with a large number of books allowed, though no Tomb of Battle and the standard cheese free rule applies. I've not selected my players yet, though the applications look fantastic - about 15 to date. Basically I would like to weave a cohesive story in which the PCs get to travel all over Eberron and confront many of the settings major players, see its most fascinating locations and experience the full Eberron flavor. All terribly ambitious for PBP I know, but shoot for the stars as they say. The campaign begins like this... [sblock=Intro]In the darkness bound, as ages roll by writhing in exquisite agony, alone, awash in pain, hatred, and hunger... The omens speak of a coming catastrophe which could shake the world to its very foundations. All around the world dark forces and great powers move, even the powerless tremble for something stirs, and fear pervades. You have been called to Breland's Capital Wroat, by coin, by loyalty, by curiosity - it matters not. Now King Boranel wishes you to serve, you stood before him in a gathering the like of which has seldom been seen, the mightiest of champions, the most nefarious rogues, and powerful magic users. "Champions of Khorvaire, I thank you for answering my call. Know that in this matter I speak for all of the Five nations, and more. It cannot have escaped your attention, but some doom is upon us, the Silver Flame has spoken, the gods themselves cannot perceive the threat. Fear threatens to hurl us into bloody war once more. We must discover what lies ahead and how to counter it. To that end I would ask each of you to risk your lives for Eberron! Will you aide us, will you step forward!" Boranel's words are met with a ragged cheer, and he nods once before stepping back. "Thank you all. Our diviners and scholars have outlined a number of sources who may be able to give us our answer, few are willing, few are easy to reach. You must call upon your considerable abilities and wits to find the answers we need. To this end you will be split into groups, some of you already work together some will be placed with those whose skills compliment theirs to cover all angles. I wish you luck my champions know that your efforts will not go unrewarded." Boranel turns and withdraws while a number of aged individuals move forward amongst the small crowd slowly separating them into group of four to six. Finally your own group is gathered before a withered old gnome who smiles up at you. "Greetings I am Ephilius Gontangle, you are Group Nine - though you may of course substitute something with a touch more flare at your discretion. Your task, should you choose to accept it is to interrogate Sora Teraza... I do not envy you it."[/sblock] So we begin with the PCs headed for the Great Crag to "interrogate" Sora Teraza, the Dust Hag Seer who is one of Droaam's infamous rulers the Daughter's of Sora Kell. My current thought is to have the PCs arrive seeing the aftermath of some chaos. They would be taken to the Hag's great hall where they are greeted by Sora Katra, with a glowering Sora Maenya at her side. Sora Katra offers to let them speak with her sister if theywill do a boon for her and retrieve an item from Xendrick's ancient Giant Empire the harp of Shattered Souls - think of anything niftier, something that could be tied into a later plot? - from the lair of the Green Dragon Zartarxis - que me stealing the adventure idea from dragons of Eberron - a bloated green dragon sent by the Dragons of Argonessan to prevent the reemergence of civilization on Xendrik. Zartarxis has been essentially depressed by his virtual exile to Xendrik and has hardly moved in centuries becoming hugely fat and having his followers turn him over, bring him food, etc. To throw in an encounter here I am going to have a creature who took part in a recent unsuccessful rebellion against the hags rule be brought out to challenge the PCs. If it can defeat them Sora Katra promises it may go in their place to retrieve the harp and all will be forgiven, if not then it ought to at least prove to be an entertaining execution. I'm thinking class leveled Ogre mage gish here, CR 14 or so, since there are to be 6 PCs. The PCs confront the big green and discover the harp in a pool of muck which he has dumped several ancient giant items - he was supposed to destroy them, but was too lazy. Returning to The Great Crag they are admitted to see Sora Tereza who is in incredible pain. The hag seer tells them that something seeks to block divination powers and is strong enough to stop even the gods, she knows of only one place where the PCs might learn the truth.... I have a couple of thoughts on this maybe Adar, maybe the Dragon Boneyard and the Council of Skulls - perhaps too many dragons? The fabled lost city of knowledge Io'lokar in Argonessan. Dragon themed again, but the City itself is populated by humanoids. So basically I'd like any critiques, feedback, or suggestions you care to offer. What would you love to do in an Eberron game, fight, see, etc.?
