Hong did something like this not too long ago. It was a high-roleplay adventure that resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. * Pretty young lad/lass hits on the burliest PC * Small fire in the kitchen, PC is mistaken for chef and asked to prepare a souflee * PCs catch other spies who are there for unrelated reasons * PC happens to look just like a noble bigwig. Comedy ensues. * A rival of a PC unexpectedly arrives. * PC is dissed before the event by some noble-type dude. At the ball, dude gets soup spilled on his clothes, he begs to change clothes with the PC so he can fit in. * PC is recognized as an adventurer by some guy who is attempting to woo a girl with tales of adventure. He has no such tales so he asks the PC to secretly feed him lines ala Cyrano de Begerac (or the movie Roxxanne if you're unfamiliar with Cyrano). This is the tricky part, to my mind. Here's one way to handle it: make them the waiters/servants. If you handle it with comedy and not drama, you can get some zaniness going on. You can't depend on the group to handle social situations well, just in the same way you couldn't depend on a party of bards to fight an orc horde head-to-head. I'm guessing you have a bunch of combat monsters here, that's great but punishing them by creating a scenario where they can only fail isn't fun. So just turn down your reality dial and play up the comedy aspect of social errors. Oh, and if they pick a fight, handle it like they did in Firefly. A duel where both parties are expected to use an exotic weapon that only the nobility really uses. Again, comedy, comedy, comedy.
