First let me say that I'm not meaning to rant. I've been thinking about this for some time, and I finally just need to let my opinion out. Second let me say that I like Eberron. I wasn't planning on buying it, but after winning a free copy of the Campaign Setting at Origins, I read it and have since purchased all the other Eberron products. That said, I'm upset at how the Eberron products so far have treated the Kalashtar and Psionics in general. Here's what I mean: Eberron introduces 4 new core races: Changeling, Kalashtar, Shifter, and Warforged. When I read the Kalashtar description, I thought, "Wow, an official campaign setting that isn't taking the 'oh, yeah, you can use psionics here too, I guess' approach, but really integrating psionics into the setting and rules right from the start!" (FYI, the Kalashtar's favored race is Psion and they get a bonus Power Point for each character level - whether that's Psion or not). Now, throughout the rest of the book, the other races each have a ton of cruchy goodies:
Warforged: 5 Feats, a Prestige Class, and a whole bunch of exclusive cool magic items Shifter: 12 Feats and a Prestige Class Changeling: Well, not much specific to the race, but there's a bunch of feats for Rogues (their favord class)
So, what about Kalashtar? um.. that would be 0 feats and 0 prestige classes. OK, well how about the Psion (their favored class)? um.. 0 feats (come on, you know that "Strong Mind" isn't really for Psions it's for their enemies) and 0 prestige classes. Now there is one really cool magic item (the Quori Shards), but that's really it. Bummer! Well, they'll make it up in the upcoming modules and supplements, right? Wrong. No Psionics in Shadows of the Last War. Well, Sharn: City of Towers is supposed to have something for everyone, right? Wrong. No Psionics. In fact, there's a list in the book that lists every class (including the NPC classes and some obscure classes) and what they'd be doing in the city... uh... except for the Psion. (Yes, there's one NPC in the book that has a level or two of Psion... thanks :(). I guess in summary, I've kind of had my hopes dashed. I hoped to finally have a setting that really included Psionics as part of the core instead of an afterthought. The Kalashtar (along with the relationship to the Quori) are a very cool idea. But they really can't use their main racial ability (+1 PP per character level) without taking a psionic class, and there's just not much support for psionic classes in any of the Ebberron products so far. My plea to Kieth Baker and WotC: Please have more support for the Kalashtar and Psionics in upcoming adventures and supplements. Let my Psionics finally have a Campaign Setting they can call home!!
