Eberron: World of Darkness

Pivotal

First Post
Hi, I am currently working on a project that tries to make the World of Darkness system (ST system) work for the Eberron setting.

I have gotten quite far in only a short time, but I would really like some feedback, both on balancing issues and general ideas and so on. Any feedback is apriciated.

My goal is to make it work both for me and any GM that is interested in trying this out.

My first impression when reading the thread title was " What in the heck are you doing, man? Aren't those things on the opposite sides of the gaming spectrum?"

And then I realized you are just talking about using the d10 system instead of a d20 system. I think Exalted would be the best starting point to work from.

Hehe, yeah, I am just grabbing the basic rules from World of Darkness, nothing else. Exalted might also work, but I've already done quite a bit of work on adapting the ST system and I am much, much more familiar with it so I feel more comfortable using that.

Essentially it is changing it to a d10 system yes, but also changing all the attributes, skills, and other game system to the ones used in the ST system, mostly just adapting it for use with Eberron. I am also making a spell system, power stat system for use with action points and I'm adapting the item system from Changeling the lost.

Wow. I wish you the best of luck, but I can't imagine ever doing anything like that.

It's like saying, "I'm inventing a new drink that combines soda with the hangover from alcohol." Ugh.

In case it's not obvious, I love most of the WoD settings, but I think the system is absolutely terrible.

Hi, I am currently working on a project that tries to make the World of Darkness system (ST system) work for the Eberron setting.

Okay, before I offer any sort of critique on such things, I always ask - why? What is the motivation behind doing this?

Asmor: Well, I actually like the system. What I like the most about it is that it is quite flexible as you simply combine any attribute+skill to what fits the situation most at the moment. I like d&d, but I find it more constricting.

Umbran: There are several reasons why I am doing this. I guess the firstmost is because I want to. I have had this idea floating around in my head for a while and I recently got a lot of inspiration on the subject and I've started writing it down and turning it in to something tangible.

Also, I want to play more Eberron, but I'm a bit tired of D&D systemwise. Not that I think its bad, just had a bit much of it.

And I am hoping for this to be somewhat balanced and being good enough that others can use this as a resource if they want to run World of darkness fantasy style. While I am making an Eberron spesific version, it is quite easy to change a few flavor bits and use it for most types of Fantasy. That is the idea at least :)

I Havent actually written the introduction yet, but stuff like my goals with this project will go there.

I am also aiming to actually playtest this sometime soon with some friends of mine, and I am hoping to get most of it done before that. It should help with balancing, but I want to try and make it somewhat balanced fore that as well.

Any help and advice you can give are very welcome. It is easy to make mistakes on this kind of thing when only one pair of eyes are looking at it.

edit: Right now, I am working on expanding the Classes section, typing down some ideas on what kind of class merits they can get and trying to define their magic power level.

I would talk to Mr. Gone about possibly getting a custom sheet once the design is done. You may also want to look at some similar systems like Hollowed Earth Expedition, Shadowrun 4e, and Desolation.

Morton: Well yeah, I guess I could ask him. I was thinking of making my own, but it would probably look a lot better if I got someone like Mr. Gone to do it.

I'll take a look at those systems :)

Oh, and if someone wants to give some feedback but doesn't want to read the whole thing there are a couple of points I would most like feedback on at the moment:

Class abilities
Spell Power level for each class
Dragonmarks flavorwise

Also, I'm still not quite sure on how to balance the spells and action points. Right now I am giving out few action points and only requiring them be used on the most powerfull spells and abilities, but I am considering changing it to being used on more spells and abilities, but giving out more of them.

Well for magic my personal inclination would be to make it like Mage only with something other than pardox as backlash. Each school is an arcana and individual spells are rotes. The only thing you would have to write yourself is how drain/mana points/whatever would work. Personally I would go with some kind of drain. Maybe a cost in willpower or bashing damage.

Class Abilities are just merits, port the ones you want over

[edit] I just remembered Witchhunter also has a similar system to Storyteller, and of course Exalted & Scion. I also know someone did Storyteller Birthright ages ago, you might surf the interwebs to see if the notes are still out there.

[edit2] I may have misunderstood you on the classes. If you mean what would you give classes I would say that everytime a Fighter would get a bonus fighter feet you gain a fighting merit or can increase one you already have. You could make a "God Stat" line indicating levels 1-10 much like Vampire/Werewolf/Mage each have their own "God Stat" for Vampire its Blood Potency etc etc.
