ECL for an awakened Dire Wolf?

No, but I'd give it an LA 1 or 2 higher than an ogre (i.e., +3 or +4). It has 6+2=8 HD, so its ECL would be 11-12.

YMMV, of course.

I'd go for a +2 or +3 LA at most, for an ECL of 10-11. The dragonne and the unicorn both have a +4 LA (cohort) and both of them have substantially more special abilities than a dire wolf does. A hell hound comes in at +3 and a pegasus has +2.

I suggest taking a look at the list of special cohorts in the DMG (pg.199) and making a comparison.

I'd knock off some of the LA for the simple fact that a dire wolf, awakened or not, is a wolf. I has no hands, can't use most magic items, is limited to one attack, etc.

I agree with lukelightning.

The Dire Wolf is unable to use most standard items in the core books. No potions, wands, rods, staves. Armor must be custom made. Weapons must be custom made. No ranged weapons. Majority of wondrous items unusable. The wolf has slots but they must be customed made.

The net effect is that you cannot give the wolf the hand-me-down second class items that would normally flow to the cohort. Equipping the wolf to survive will cost 50%-100% more than a normal cohort.

It is not a small thing that a cohort cannot drink potions nor pour them down the throat of a fallen PC -- the standard activity for humbled fighters. Or even pull out a bow. When the wolf gets chewed up and must pull off the front line, he becomes completely useless and may require rescuing.
