Elemental Animal Companions

My friend is playing a Fire Genasi ranger and wants a Fire Elemental Hawk (or Eagle) as an animal companion when he reaches 4th level. But I cannot find any rules for this (accept for the table for druids/rangers having improved animal companions based on hit dice). The problem is the template doesn't increase the animals hit dice or challenge rating (at first) so it's not really that unbalancing. Any body got anything on this?

Do you own Unearthed Arcana and/or the Manual of the Planes? There's a Planar Ranger variant in Unearthed Arcana that gains a Planar Animal Companion rather than a normal animal companion, along with other planar stuff- you could easily, in my opinion, just switch out the Animal Companion while leaving everything else intact. But since I believe it may only allow Celestial and Fiendish animals, you could try looking in the Manual of the Planes (if you have it) for an equal-powered fire template rather than Celestial or Fiendish. Then again, if your DM is lenient, you could just give it the Fire subtype or something and be done with it.
