Okay, here are the options you have for (appropriate) melee classes: PHB Fighter Paladin (hopefully, the Paladin of Freedom one from UA, or availiable here) Ranger Miniatures Handbook Marshall PHBII Knight, availiable here Here are my opinions on some: The Knight gets in there and fightsfightsfights. He just wants to tear you a new hole. That's cool, but gettnig into melee in the style that the class dictates is quite different than standard D&D. I think it'd be fun, if only to try out the new class on the block. Marshall is a back-up character with only 3/4 BAB but his auras and d10 HD (IIRC) mean that he can stick around and be a good help for the party. That's okay, but you won't be absolutely frontine here. The Ranger could be an excellent choice here for an archery PC. You won't have the final combat mastery (meh), but you'll be running smoothly with +6 damage against evil outsiders (neat!). That's a really nice boon for you (and, as Luthien Greyspear said easily RPd). However.... The Fighter, with his plethora of feats and better HP could easily out-do the ranger for archery (and do it in fullplate). Check out Complete Warrior for some different feats to help you control the battle field, and you ahve a better option than the ranger, frankly. Perhaps if you were to dip a single level into ranger (good ref save, nice skill points at first (6+Intx4), free track feat, wild empathy and favoured enemy (XX evil outsiders) and you'd have a nice character with a good set-up or kickng demonic butt! (and you're getting 1/3 of the bonus against outsiders with onyl 1/10th of the levels ;)). The Paladin is another option, and I suggest the Paladin of Freedom varint from the online SRD or UA because it suits elves better. --- Personally, I think your character would benefit best with 1 Ranger/8 Fighter/1 PrC, built as an archer. 9th level fighter doesn't give a feat, so take a nice PrC instead (I can think of a few, like the Peerless Archer from Silver Marches, Order of the Iniate from Cmoplete Warrior os another great one. Check out Complete Adventurer for more PrC goodness - there is tons of great stuff in there. Also, for race, I suggest the Wood Elf (they're in the MM and have favourred class: ranger - so no XP penalty!). They still live in the woods around Cormanthor, keeping evil at bay. With +2 Str, +2 Dex -2 Con and -2 Int, they are pretty hefty for +0 LA. As an archer, the - Con won't hurt as much, and make sure you keep that Int score above 10 (12, preferrably) so you can milk some skillpoints out of the ranger before you go for the scrounge-fest that is the fighter. The Str and Dex will help you, especially if you use a Mighty Composite Bow, preferrably a Greatbow from Complete Warrior (1d10 damage, nice range and goodness all-around). Hope that helps :) Happy gaming!
