Elves interfere with road construction

Iceland seems quite awesome. Officials are stopping road construction out of concern for disturbing an elf habitat.

On a related note, has anyone ever read Elizabeth Boyer's World of the Alfar and Wizard's War series? They were set in a medieval/mythical Iceland that crossed over into a hidden magical realm. Very good stuff, but I never hear about them nowadays.

For one, it's not true.

The reason the road has been stalled (not cancelled) is because of heavy protest (the area is beautiful and was immortalized by our most famous painter, who painted it dozens of times) and accusations of corruption (that the only reason this road is being built is to line the pockets of people connected with the interviewed minister and the PM).

Yeah, according to folklore it's full of elves, and there's this one lady who's been publicly concerned about the elves—but she also makes her living selling the idea of elves to tourists.

Iceland's rugged landscape is no bucolic idyll - the very ground boils and spits irrationally, the surrounding craggy, black mountains fester menacingly and above, the sky is constantly herniated by the iron-grey clouds it strains to hold up. It's a visceral, raw and brutal beauty which makes Heathcliff's Wuthering Heights look like a prissy, pastoral watercolour.

Someone needs to hire this reporter out to write the box text for D&D adventures. Seriously, festering mountains and a herniated sky - that's some impressively unorthodox imagery.
