EN-World Setting Proposals (for those who won't submit to WotC)

Frostmarrow

First Post
As much as I'd love to send the winning entry to Wizards and become the new Ed Greenwood of the role-playing community I know that's not going to happen. However, I really like the idea and thought that there should be a thread for shadow-submissions. A thread where semi-lazy people like myself can submit an entry just for the fun of it.

I'll go first.

Fantasy Setting Proposal Template

1. Core Ethos Sentence. [A sentence that describes the core ethos of the world. For example, Forgotten Realms is a world of sword-and-sorcery adventure, where heroes battle monsters with magic.]

A world of sword-and-sandals adventure, where heroes battle evil with brawn and wits.

2. Who are the heroes? [Brief description of heroes central to the setting. This need not be a comprehensive list.]

Anyone with strength and courage can become a true hero. Famous heroes are often the head of their family or clan. Heroes are responsible people who wield considerable power. Part of being a true hero is making difficult decisions. Heroes become leaders rather than the other way around.

3. What do they do? [What are the main objectives of the heroes, and what steps do they take to achieve those objectives?]

Heroes protect the weak against those who would take advantage of them. Trusted heroes are often called upon to negotiate or settle disputes. Heroes are expected to handle any threat be they monstrous or political. Heroes without a position travel the world along the trade-routes in search of adventure. More intrepid adventurers venture into the white areas of the map to see what has not been seen before.

4. Threats, Conflicts, Villains [What is the main danger to the world, and from whom does it come?]

The greatest threats come from ambitious evildoers who wish to enslave others. There are evil rulers of city-states, warlords, sorcerers and still others who threaten the daily life of common people. A quick way to gain power for an ambitious evildoer is to strike a bargain with an extra-planar entity. Sorcerers will do absolutely vile things in order to "honor" their contracts. In return they learn to possess minds and summon monsters from beyond, to do their bidding.

Dragons aren't villains per se but self-serving and untrustworthy none the less. Arcane spellcasters and others who seek knowledge turn to the dragons. A dragon sometimes help out but typically they require something in return and they are not below changing their demands as they go along. Dragons aren't evil but the demands they make can be more than a handful.

It's a time of mass migration. Vast numbers of people travel continents in search of a better life. There are also settled areas with people who jealously guard their castles, citys or dungeons from strangers. Conflicts between large groups of people are commonplace.

There are lots of monsters who constantly threaten the population. Such monsters include dinosaurs and dire animals; larger, more viscious versions of common predators.

5. Nature of magic [What is the source of magic? How abundant/scarce is it?]

Magic is not something commoners see every day but it is there, it's everywhere. For those who appreciate the power of magic it's readily available, although always at a steep price. Magic can be bargained for with demons and devils. It can be traded or tricked from dragons or it can be granted by the good will of the Firstborn. The Fistborn is the good god to whom people turn in times of trouble.

6. What’s new? What’s different? [What makes this setting unique?]

The Firstborn is the only god. However, there are several other entities who almost rival the Firstborn in power. Such entities are referred to as demonprinces or archdevils and they can be found on other planes of existance. The dragons are the most powerful beings in the world and they attract worshippers much like the Firstborn do.

Mass migration makes the world a constantly changing place.

That's it. I'm glad I got it out of my system. I wonder, however, where I got the name "Firstborn". I can swear I have read it somewhere before. Well, it's just a work-in-progress-never-to-be-finished anyway. :)

I am not even far enough along in my own ideas to post an idea at this point, but I wanted to point out: why not send them this? I understand if you are saying you are too lazy to ever write a 10page proposal, let alone a 100 page setting bible. But you just did most of the work to send a solid 1 page proposal to them, so why not do it and see what happens?

Sure, it needs a couple tweaks to the writing and ideas, but you are half way there.

Sure, I'll take a go at this...

1. Core Ethos Sentence.

A psi-centric setting focusing on the possibility of the Human potential (represented through a multitude of races, of course).

2. Who are the heroes?

Anyone with the wit and mettle to make their mark on history can be a hero.

3. What do they do?

There are several possibilities. Currently, the world is ravaged by the conflict between opposing Elemental Gods, each of whom may be cast-out from the world. Perhaps the ruins of the ancient empire hold the keys, or perhaps the divided kingdoms and nations can be united. The possibilities are endless.

4. Threats, Conflicts, Villains

If anything's the "biggest" danger, it's the Prince of Frozen Tears. The Ice God definately holds the upper hand in the conflicts that have lasted nearly ten mellenia, and the other Elemental Gods seem to be loosing what ground the have.

5. Nature of magic

Magic is difficult to obtain, but powerful once gotten. For Channelers, it is the direct manipulation of the life energy around them. Those new to the study are weakened quickly by its use, but those that persavere to become great masters are unrivaled in their might. Some, however, take short cuts, becoming Defilers.

The Sorcerers are artists, learned in the lore of genies, sculpting elemental energies to their whims.

The Witch Doctors converse and make pacts with the Spirits, working their primitive but potent magics through symbols, ritual and talismans.

The Mystics (Pyschic Warriors/Psions) base their magic on the myths and legends of the ancient past, using their minds to manipulate the Arcane Energies around them (Psionics are Same).

The Druids gain their powers from the EarthMother, whom the work to heal.

The Shaman also work with Spirits, but rather than command them as Witch Doctors do, they are themselves the servants, acting as their agents and serving their goals.

The Will Shapers study the ancient lore of the past, the forbidden arts of fallen Empire. Their power is purely from within, the True Psi that all others fear (Skills based, Psionics are Different).

6. What’s new? What’s different?

The Gods meant to rule the world have fallen; While Humanity was in it's infancy, they grew decadent and destroyed themselves, causing Humanity (which is the bulk of most races, not just PH Humans) to exist without them. This led to a a Darwin-esque evolution from which the races evolved into their current multitudes. Only a few races (Goblins, Kobolds, Bugbears, most Giants, etc.) are not considered to be Humans.

Due to the current Elemental Wars (being fought by invader-gods), the majority of the world is locked in a deity-induced Ice Age. This has resulted in isolated cultures and societies. A sizable equatorial region does exist, but beyond that, dozens of isolated cultures dwell in small pockets of habitable environments, often with little or no knowledge of the other regions.

The world itself is 2x the size of Earth, with a Hollow-World concept in play, giving it an actual surface-area approximately 4x that of the Real World. This allows for a wide variety of cultures, terrain, ecologies, histories, religions, and so on.

Except for Elves. There aren't any Elves. I don't know why, for sure. I just wrote the history, and then realized that Elves never happened. After a few moments of pondering, I decided that didn't really bother me, so I never shoe-horned them in. Didn't feel the need.

Yuan-Ti:

Hello, again!

To answer your question, for my own reasons, any way, it's a question of creative control. I have no desire to work on such a project (as I have for 5 years now, going on 6), just to hand it to someone else and say, "here, it's all yours now".

Couldn't do it.

Besides, my own stuff is tailored mostly for my group and myself. It's low powered, low magic, and geared for RP and problem-solving more than combat. Not something likely to be commercially popular; And the changes necessary to make it so would really turn it into something else.

Since I'm not likely to enjoy playing that something else, I'll just keep it.:D

I have no illusions. Quite frankly I can't compete with real writers. English is my second language and all too often I find myself lacking the vocabulary to get my message through.

This thread is for all those who don't see themselves as Wizards' natural choice yet still want to put something down.

Until you stated that English was your second language, I didn't notice you were from Sweden. Your ability to write in English is very good, better than a lot of people whose native language is English. A mistake here and there, mostly in symbol use like Wizards (plural) and Wizard's (possessive), but overall quite clear.

Bravo.

No elves? That's pretty bold. Elves are as loved as they are abhorred among the gaming population.

I actually love Elves. However, when the Aedon concept first hit paper, Elves just didn't come up. My last campaign had them, and my next (if there's a next, Aedon keeps growing) probably will have them as well. Just didn't happen this time around, is all.

Considering what would have happened to them after converting to 3E, it's probably a good thing such a transition wasn't required. The Psionics rebuild has been hard enough.:D
