Encounters: Session 16 black dragon

Anyone have the stats for the black dragon from tonight's Encounters session? I'd like to see the monster that damn near killed us all.

Not in front of me, but I do know it's a Level 2 version of the Black Dragon in the Monster Vault. It only had 144 HP.

My group of 5 almost trounced it. Fortunately, the bolt holes gave it a mobility advantage. The tables turned pretty drastically in one round. At one point, two characters were dying. But they pulled through.

What started off as a shockingly lame encounter turned into the memorable one I had hoped for.

Our tables had a rough go of it. One TPKed, the table I DMed would have, but two PCs managed to flee up the ladder.

If I had to guess it's the one from Monster Vault and has Action Recovery/Instinctive Action. Most horrifyingly, it has that power that adds vulnerability that can only be removed with a heal check. If that sounds familiar, it's an absolutely brutal monster and definitely should be feared.

It's a dragon, it's supposed to scare the crap out of you. :)

I dropped more than half the party into negatives more than once with it, but they eventually won.

I don't have the stat block here at the office, but it was very similar to the Monster Vault one, level 2 solo lurker (elite?)

I upped mine to level 3, as I felt that my groups hadn't been getting sufficiently challenged in previous encounters. Even though I forgot some details to the PCs' benefit (like the acid echoes), the dragon wiped the floor with 'em, killing dead all but 1 of the 6 players, which is the first time I've actually killed anyone at my table. Between instinctive devouring, action points, bloodied breath, and tail sweep, it was taking actions constantly, and once bloodied, acidic blood was tossing out mounds of damage on player turns as well. The shroud of gloom was devastating, not just on direct acid attacks, but on converting ongoing 5 acid damage to ongoing 10, and turning acidic blood into auto-hit 10 acid damage multiple times a round. It was a good fight. :]

Hmm... mileage may vary.

Most of our party got caught in the shroud of gloom/breath weapon, too. But the defenders cornered the dragon in its first spot, and even though they all got a faceful of tail sweep were able to hit with lots of OAs when it bolted. When the dragon came back up in a new spot, my thief tumbled over for the flank and sneak attack/backstab while the rest of the party hacked it down with a full frontal assault. The dragon surrendered to a well-timed intimidation check at the end of round 3. Although our DM forgot the acid blood damage to adjacent characters as well, I was expecting a bigger bag of hit points from a dragon solo...
